DUNTON, UK - – Ford has created some extraordinary Transits over the years including this, the XXL, probably the longest Transit in the world.
Revealed to the world’s press in 2007, this striking one-off special was built to celebrate Transit being crowned 2007 International Van of the Year.
It was designed and hand-crafted by the Transit team at Dunton as a special project, as Barry Gale, formerly Ford of Europe's chief engineer for commercial vehicles, explains.
“The team spent a huge amount of their personal time putting together the Transit XXL and we were delighted with the result. It was a challenging project.”
Transit XXL measured 7.4 metres in length and had a wheelbase of 5.9 metres. The team used off the shelf Ford Transit components throughout, and the vehicle was based on two short wheelbase Transit Tourneo models fused together to create a bespoke limousine capable of carrying the driver plus seven passengers in full “first class” comfort.
Barry adds: “Each passenger had a leather, seven-way adjustable captain's seat complete with heating, lumbar adjustment and an armrest. And with four full-size sliding doors, and fantastic legroom, gaining access couldn’t have been simpler.”
