Ford Innovation Challenge: The Future of Engineering Takes Shape in Pacheco

Aug 24, 2026

Pacheco Plant, Argentina

At Pacheco, the Ford Innovation Challenge (FIC) was built from the ground up as a bridge between the drive of a new generation and the realities of an industry that never stands still. What kicked off as a workshop with a single university has, in a short time, grown into a program that now brings together four universities and dozens of teams tackling real challenges straight from the plant floor.

It all kicked off with the "Ford Innovation Challenge: Features Edition," run together with the Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (FIUBA). We brought in electronic, mechanical, and industrial engineering students to dream up and design innovative features for the Ford Ranger, working within an actual industrial setting. This wasn't the first time Ford Argentina had teamed up with FIUBA: the company had previously donated a Ford Ranger to the school, a vehicle that was worked into the curriculum so students could get hands-on with real practices and projects. Teams from this first round visited the Pacheco plant to get a firsthand look at the production floor, were coached along the way as their projects took shape, and, on the final day, pitched their ideas to a specialized regional panel of judges from Ford and FIUBA. On top of that, an HR team scouted individual talent for future opportunities: as a result, three young engineers were selected for Ford's internship program.

On the strength of that first outcome, the program scaled up: the Ford Innovation Challenge II: Manufacturing Edition was launched, this time pulling in four universities —Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad Tecnológica Nacional - Facultad Regional General Pacheco (UTN FRGP), Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE), and Universidad Austral— and five real challenges pulled directly from key areas of the plant: Assembly, Stamping, Logistics, Paint, and Powertrain. The call for applicants drew in more than 200 applicants, out of which 80 students were selected and split into 20 teams.

The second stage of this edition was "Trials Day," which brought together 19 teams and 76 students. In the morning, each team pitched their project to a panel made up of the relevant area manager and technical reps from the brand; in the afternoon, they had four hours to build out their proposals in real time, putting the morning feedback into action. Between sessions, students got to unwind in a recreational space set up together with Red Bull, featuring Formula 1 simulators, a PlayStation 5, and tunes courtesy of "La Tango," a Ford Bronco V6 turned into a mobile DJ booth.

The awards ceremony for this edition brought together academic leaders from all four universities alongside Ford executives and mentors. First place went to UADE and UTN FRGP, who won a driving and technology experience at Ford's test track; second place went entirely to the FIUBA teams, who received medals, certificates, and institutional kits.

For the organizing team, the payoff isn't just about sharpening students' technical skills — it's also about the human connection forged between the university community and the plant: mentors from different areas of Ford stuck with the teams every step of the way, and several participants from earlier editions have since come on board at Ford as interns.

Across both editions, the FIC has already racked up more than 100 participants, over 300 applicants, 4 partner universities —with 2 more on the way— more than 9 Ford areas actively collaborating, senior leadership engaged from start to finish, and more than 30 solutions ready to be implemented on the plant floor.

Through the Ford Innovation Challenge, Ford Argentina reaffirms its commitment to education, talent development, and innovation, laying the groundwork for future partnerships that will push technology and engineering forward across the country.

The organizing team at Ford Argentina is already gearing up to launch the Ford Innovation Challenge III before year's end. The theme of this new edition remains under wraps, but it promises to once again challenge students' ingenuity.
