What? Your In-Vehicle Voice Assistant Has An MBTI Too?

Esion’s three-and-a-half-year-old daughter says "bye-bye" to the in-vehicle voice assistant every time she gets out of the car. She asks it to tell stories and even requests that her favorite toy unicorn be written into the narrative. To her, the car is a friend.

Adults, of course, don't typically say goodbye to an infotainment system. But children do.

When we asked Esion what the system meant to him, he replied without hesitation: "I think of it as a companion."

He explains that this "companion" was born from years of painstaking refinement by multiple teams — marketing research, digital experiences, engineering, and HMI design etc..

Moving Toward Rationality Amid Change

Esion, a Digital Product Manager at Ford China, joined through the 2013 Ford GT (Graduate Trainee) program. Around 2015, he began working in connected vehicle technology, a period when mobile internet began rapidly penetrating the automotive industry and

"connected vehicles" evolved from a conceptual buzzword into tangible products, and the entire industry was searching for what an in-vehicle infotainment system should ultimately look like.

Over the past few years, China's smart cockpit industry underwent a distinct period of "feature inflation." Many automakers rushed to stack capabilities: increasingly complex interfaces, hyper-loaded entertainment ecosystems, and overly flashy interaction designs. To some extent, this was an inevitable outcome of intense market competition—everyone wanted to prove how smart they were by packing in more features.

But user feedback didn't fully align with this direction — the marketing value of quite a few features was disproven in real-world use.

Esion believes: The biggest shift in in-vehicle infotainment systems over recent years isn't that they've grown more aggressive, but rather more rational and refined.

"A few years ago, everyone was competing on who had more features. Today, many automakers are actively stripping back the clutter." This insight isn't just his personal observation. Across market feedback and engineering validation over the past few years, the same truth emerged repeatedly: high-frequency usage always centers around a few core scenarios. "Digital experiences must focus on users' genuine needs and solve real pain points, rather than just grabbing headlines."

SYNC Max was born directly out of this evolving industry mindset.

 

Infotainment System or Smartphone?

The team realized that user expectations for smart cockpits had evolved from "Does it exist?" to "Is it easy to use?" Especially when it comes to maps, voice interaction, and overall UX.

"Amap (Gaode Maps) integration was easily one of the highest-requested features by users."

Navigation was one of the most requested features among users.

Over the past few years, the smartphone ecosystem has deeply shaped Chinese consumers' habits. Whatever services users rely on their phones for, they naturally expect the same experience in their car — ideally synced seamlessly.

This time, SYNC Max integrated AutoNavi (Amap) — not through simple integration, but through extensive localized development based on the AutoNavi SDK. Features like instrument cluster map projection, traffic light countdowns, green-wave speed reminders, and phone-car connectivity were optimized by the engineering team around real Chinese driving scenarios, keeping AutoNavi's routing engine and data consistent between the car and phone.

The interaction logic was redesigned by the HMI team to be more "smartphone-like": a flat, zero-layer card-based desktop, freely customizable feature modules, a pull-down quick-access panel, and prioritized high-frequency functions. Every card on the home screen can be dragged and repositioned at will, and the quick controls in the pull-down menu follow the same logic.

The entire interface is clean, flat, and practical—designed not merely to "look like a smartphone," but to eliminate the learning curve.

"We want users to naturally know how to use it the moment they step into the vehicle."

From "Yes, But" to "Yes, And"

Product development often comes with growing pains. The hardest part of the entire project wasn't building the product — but constantly challenging and refuting their own assumptions. "You naturally believe what you've designed is right," he says. "But in the end, you often find that users' operational logic often differs from what a product manager imagines."

For instance, during early internal discussions, some team members questioned whether instrument cluster map projection should be enabled by default, reasoning that navigation was already visible on the central touchscreen and displaying it twice seemed redundant. However, extensive user research revealed that the vast majority of drivers actually loved this feature.

The reason was simple: safety. Drivers can view key navigation prompts directly on the instrument cluster without turning their head, keeping their vision focused straight ahead. Consequently, the HMI and engineering teams integrated navigation into the instrument screen, tailoring the interface to fit natural driving habits.

There were many similar moments of iteration:

Prior to the launch of the All-New Lincoln Corsair, the mic-free karaoke feature was set to debut as a flagship novelty. However, during testing, the team found that voice pickup quality on certain trim levels was still not up to par. Under normal circumstances, few teams would adjust a project launch timeline for an entertainment feature. Yet, they ultimately chose to delay rollout by several days so the engineering team could re-calibrate audio algorithms, speakers, and overall cabin acoustics.

Their insistence paid off. Following the launch of the Lincoln Corsair, user feedback on the mic-free karaoke feature was overwhelmingly positive.

Giving the Machine A Soul

On the new-generation SYNC Max connected system, what Esion personally cares about most is voice interaction.

In his view, Chinese users' expectations for in-vehicle voice assistants have entered a whole new era. Early voice systems functioned essentially like basic command lines. Today, users expect natural, conversational AI interaction.

Therefore, a core goal of the SYNC Max voice system is to reduce "cognitive load." Drivers don't need to pre-structure their sentences or memorize specific keywords. Multiple commands can be given in a single sentence—navigating, playing music, and adjusting the air conditioning—and the system executes them sequentially. Even during casual conversation about a concert, if a user says "navigate to the first one," the system understands that "the first one" refers to the location mentioned moments earlier.

Powering this capability is the integration of a Large Language Model (LLM) into SYNC Max. The engineering team executed extensive vehicle-tailored optimizations, including short-term contextual memory, fuzzy semantic understanding, continuous multi-command processing, and wake-word-free interaction.

Yet, automotive AI and smartphone AI are fundamentally different products.

"Inside a car, the core need is speed," he noted. "When driving, nobody wants to listen to a 1,000-word essay as an answer."

Thus, SYNC Max avoids displaying complex step-by-step thinking processes, emphasizing instead lightning-fast response times and concise feedback. The engineering team specifically optimized voice response latency, aiming for a conversation that feels fluid and natural rather than "waiting on a machine."

Listening to Esion's story, one can easily imagine the dedicated team behind this product—from user insights to product definition, from interaction design to engineering execution. It represents countless instances of challenging their own assumptions from the user's perspective, starting over, and spending late nights fine-tuning features to eliminate every single bug.

To make this sense of "naturalness" even more complete, the team even created a distinct personality for the Lincoln Voice Assistant. They completed an MBTI personality test for the virtual assistant—answering every question based on "what kind of person this brand should represent." They then auditioned thirty voice actors, voted on the top candidate, recorded emotional nuances, and trained a cloud-based model to give the voice assistant its unique, unmistakable vocal identity.
