Under the shifting winds of the automotive landscape, Ford has rewritten our playbook to prioritize affordability, choice, and robust profitability.
At the heart of this transition is a commitment to diverse multi-energy propulsion choices, offering drivers a versatile spectrum of power rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.
Today, freedom of choice includes naturally aspirated V8 engines, EcoBoost engines, hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. In the future, Ford will significantly expand our powertrain offerings, embracing a mix of traditional hybrids and innovative extended range electric vehicles (EREVs), while focusing our fully electric development on smaller, more affordable models built on our flexible Universal EV platform, beginning in 2027.
It is a pragmatic, customer-first strategy that is taking hold, particularly in the pickup segment, according to Ford U.S. Sales Analyst Erich Merkle.
“We have had a lot of success with hybrid pickups with Maverick coming in as America’s best-selling hybrid pickup and F-150 coming in as America’s best-selling full-size hybrid pickup, outselling Toyota’s offering,” he said. “We are also outselling GM’s Silverado on gas, diesel, and hybrid. Given our pickup powertrain diversity, we can serve buyers where our competitors can’t.”
But this multi-energy strategy isn't confined to the truck bed. Ford’s commitment to giving customers the power of choice extends across our entire portfolio — from family SUVs to commercial transit vans. By matching the right technology to the right customer needs, we are ensuring that no matter how a customer drives, there is a Ford designed to fit their life.
To understand how this diverse approach sets us apart, here is a closer look at the five distinct propulsion options driving Ford’s future.
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicle (Gas and Diesel)
The foundational workhorses of the Ford lineup, engineered for maximum capability and the convenience of established fueling infrastructure.
The Benefits:
- Unmatched Capability: The gold standard for heavy-duty towing, high-payload tasks, and demanding work.
- Proven Reliability: Trusted performance from legendary powerplants like the EcoBoost and Power Stroke Diesel.
- Visceral Performance: The irreplaceable sound, feel, and thrill of iconic power, like the Mustang V8.
The Customer: Commercial fleets, heavy-duty and recreational towers, and drivers who demand maximum mechanical utility and quick, familiar refueling.
