Ford Pro Electrifies Berlin Public Transport Company’s Commercial Vehicle Fleet

Jul 22, 2026

BERLIN, Germany – Visit Berlin, and you simply cannot miss the yellow buses and trains of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). Ford Pro is now helping Germany's largest local transport company make the transition to electric by delivering 131 fully battery-powered vans to the capital by the end of the year.

The new fleet consists of 49 E-Transit Custom and 82 E-Transit models, and BVG will use the vehicles for maintenance, service and transport operations.

The E-Transit Custom delivers 100 kW (136 hp) and offers a usable battery capacity of 64 kWh and a range of up to 331 kilometres.

In urban environments, Europe's best-selling electric van can travel up to 443 kilometres on a single battery charge, making it particularly suitable for busy operations in city traffic – exactly where the BVG is on the move.

The 82 E-Transit models offer 135 kW (183 hp) of power and a battery capacity of 68 kWh. This means that the large electric vans achieve a combined range of up to 317 kilometres or up to 403 kilometres in city traffic.

With a loading volume of up to 15.1 cubic meters, they are designed for more extensive transport and material logistics within BVG operations.

“The electrification of commercial vehicle fleets in urban areas requires practical solutions that can be flexibly adapted to different application profiles,” says Wilhelm Buchmüller, Ford Pro Director for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

"This is exactly where we come in: With our fully electrified Ford Pro fleet as well as our software and service offerings, we offer commercial customers tailor-made solutions for the transformation to e-mobility. We are particularly pleased when we can support municipal companies like BVG in electrifying their fleets and achieving their sustainability goals.”

Ford Pro offers at least one electrified model in each of its five commercial vehicle series. With this comprehensive offering, Ford Pro was already the clear leader in new registrations in this segment last year with a market share of 36.4 percent. So far this year, the share has risen even further to 37.6 percent.

And the range of Ford Pro electric vans is also growing: the new Ford Transit City is expected to be launched on the market at the end of the year. This fifth Transit model is particularly suitable for inner-city operations from craft businesses to delivery services.

In addition to compliance with sustainability goals, economic efficiency plays a crucial role when switching to electric mobility, especially for commercial customers. That is why the total cost of ownership (TCO) is increasingly becoming the focus of many fleet managers.

Calculations from Ford Pro show that making the switch from diesel to the E-Transit or E-Transit Custom can save around 10,000 euros over a period of four years (with 20,000 kilometres driven per year) - thanks to lower costs for energy, maintenance and leasing.

To support the electrification of fleet vehicles, Ford Pro also offers helpful software tools. The E-Switch Assist analyses the networked vehicle data of the existing combustion engine fleet and calculates exactly which vehicles can easily be replaced by e-vans. E-Telematics offers additional support for fleet customers who have already decided to switch to electric commercial vehicles.

The software provides real-time information about charging statuses, ranges and the most efficient route planning. Smaller companies without their own fleet manager can particularly benefit from this, but also larger fleet customers such as BVG.
