Ford’s Community Eye Care Project Brings Vision, Hope, and Opportunity

Apr 02, 2026

We often talk about the "freedom of movement." But for thousands of people in the rural stretches of Sanand Taluka and the Ahmedabad District in Gujarat, India, that freedom starts with the ability to see the world clearly.

Recognizing that vision is the foundation for learning, working, and living with confidence, the Ford Sanand Engine Plant recently concluded a landmark Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative: The Community Eye Care Project.

A Clinic on Wheels

In many of the communities surrounding our Sanand operations, access to quality eye care is limited by distance and affordability. To bridge this gap, Ford—in collaboration with the Blind People Association (BPA) and supported by Ford Philanthropy—launched a state-of-the-art Mobile Ophthalmic Clinic.

From April 2025 to March 2026, this "clinic on wheels" traveled to 70 villages, bringing modern diagnostic technology directly to the doorsteps of those who needed it most, including laborers, elderly citizens, and marginalized groups.

The van was equipped with advanced medical tools, including:

  • Slit Lamps for detailed eye examinations.
  • Auto Refractometers for precise vision prescriptions.
  • Non-contact Tonometers to detect early signs of glaucoma.

Employee Engagement in Action

The success of the project wasn't just measured by the equipment, but by the people behind it. Ford employees and local dealers stepped up to volunteer their time, assisting with outreach activities, supporting the camp operations, and leading eye health awareness sessions.

"This project reflects Ford’s deep-rooted commitment to being a good neighbor," said a representative from the Sanand Engine Plant. "By making eye care accessible and affordable, we aren't just treating vision—we are promoting social equity and helping our community members lead more productive lives."

Impact by the Numbers: April 2025 – March 2026

The scale of the initiative’s impact over the past year is a testament to the team's dedication:

  • 70 villages covered across the region.
  • 8,369 beneficiaries screened for vision issues.
  • 3,464 pairs of spectacles distributed.
  • 4,841 individuals provided with essential medicines.
  • 265 life-changing surgeries recommended.

Walking the Extra Mile

The initiative went beyond medical screenings to address holistic mobility and independence. During the project, the team distributed 50 self-employment kits to specially-abled individuals to help them secure their livelihoods, and 30 tricycleswere provided to enhance the mobility of differently-abled community members.

Special attention was also paid to the next generation through a Pediatric Eye Camp, ensuring that local children have the clear vision necessary to succeed in their studies and pursue their dreams.

Seeing Beyond Today

As the Mobile Eye Van continues its journey, it carries more than just medical supplies. It carries the Ford spirit of innovation and compassion. By combining technology with a "people-first" approach, the Sanand Engine Plant has helped thousands of people see a clearer, brighter future.”
