Each month we profile the many different Faces of Ford, getting to know our colleagues in and out of the office. This month we’re in conversation with Sithembele Memani, IPQ Process Coach at the Struandale Engine Plant.
Who is Sithembele Memani? Tell us more about yourself?
I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha. I come from a loving family of seven, and being the middle child taught me the importance of balance, teamwork, and understanding others.
Growing up, I enjoyed participating in a variety of sports, as many children did during those days. Over time, I developed a passion for cricket, which I played until 2010. I am a proud husband and father of four wonderful children, three girls, a boy and a dog. Professionally, I currently work as an IPQ Process Coach in the Quality Department, which I believe is the heart of manufacturing.
What's one part of your role that people might be surprised to learn about?
Leadership is something that seems to naturally find me, both inside and outside of work. I serve as a Session Clerk and Youth President at my church. In my family and community, I also carry the role of Intlabi (family ritual leader) of the Amangutyana people. This is a position that is not chosen by the individual but entrusted by family elders through cultural traditions and guidance. It is a responsibility I am honoured to carry.
What's one lesson you've learned at the plant that you carry with you outside of work?
Integrity is one of the most valuable lessons I have learned and continue to live by. It is the foundation of trust and good character. I make a conscious effort to instil this value in my children by teaching them the importance of being honest and doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
If you could wake up tomorrow with a new skill, what would you choose?
I would choose trading and investment skills. Being able to better understand financial markets and wealth creation would help me make informed decisions and create opportunities for my family’s future.
How has your time at Ford shaped you, both professionally and personally?
During my 24 years with the company, I have learned the value of patience, perseverance, and staying committed to a plan. Ford has taught me that while hard work and dedication are important, there are also things beyond our control. Personally, I have learned to trust the process, remain focused on what I can influence, and trust God to guide the rest.
If you found a time machine, would you travel to the past or the future?
I would probably travel to the past. Like many people, there are a few mistakes I made while growing up that I would love the opportunity to correct. As for the future, I prefer not to know what lies ahead. Life’s surprises are part of the journey, and I enjoy discovering them as they come.
What's a place you've always wanted to visit, and what would you want to do there?
I have always wanted to visit Jamaica. I would love to experience its vibrant culture, enjoy the music, meet the people, and learn more about the country's rich history and traditions.
If you could keep only one app on your phone, which one would you choose and why?
WhatsApp would be my choice. It keeps me connected with family, friends, and colleagues no matter where they are in the world. Communication is important to me, and WhatsApp makes staying in touch simple and convenient.
What's the best piece of advice you've received that you would carry forward to someone younger?
Your attitude determines your direction in life. It shapes how you respond to challenges, opportunities, and other people. A positive attitude can open doors and help you grow, while a negative one can hold you back. In many ways, your attitude can make or break your future.
