Inside Ford Thailand's 20th Technician Skill Contest: From Customer Concerns to Accurate Solutions

Oct 04, 2026

When a vehicle arrives at a Ford service center with a customer's concern, a technician's job does not begin by opening the hood or connecting a diagnostic tool. It starts with listening.

Understanding the customer's concern, distinguishing between perceived symptoms and actual vehicle issues, and then combining technical expertise, experience, and vehicle data to identify the root cause are all part of the process. As vehicle technologies become more sophisticated, the role of Ford technicians has evolved beyond repair work.

This commitment to excellence is why Ford Thailand continues to invest in technician development through its annual Technician Skill Contest, now in its 20th year. More than a contest, the event serves as a platform to strengthen technical capabilities, raise service standards, and reinforce Ford's commitment to delivering the best possible ownership experience.

The Technician Skill Contest is more than a competition. It reflects the heart of after-sales service. Every accurate diagnosis, every quality repair, and every interaction that builds customer confidence contributes to the overall ownership experience. This is part of Ford's commitment to treating customers like family, and why we have continued to invest in technician development through this competition for 20 consecutive years.

More Than Repair Skills

This year's contest attracted 270 technicians from across Ford's dealer network in Thailand, with only 10 finalists advancing to the championship round. The selection process assessed product knowledge, diagnostic capabilities, troubleshooting skills, warranty knowledge, and understanding of Ford service standards.

During the final round, contestants faced identical real-world diagnostic scenarios under the supervision of Ford Technical Service Engineers, using a Ford Everest Sport 2.0L Turbo as the competition vehicle. The contest tested far more than technical knowledge. Finalists were challenged to listen to customer concerns, distinguish actual vehicle issues from customer perceptions, diagnose root causes, determine appropriate repair solutions, and communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively. These are the same skills technicians rely on every day when serving Ford customers.

At Ford, we believe great after-sales service begins with great people. As vehicles become more advanced, the role of our technicians becomes even more critical. They are the experts who diagnose complex concerns, identify root causes, perform quality repairs, and help restore customers’ confidence at every service visit.

Delivering Fix It Right First Time

At the heart of Ford's after-sales service strategy is Fix It Right First Time (FIRFT), a philosophy focused on accurately diagnosing and resolving concerns during the first service visit. Today, Ford Thailand's first-time repair completion rate stands at 96 percent, reflecting the effectiveness of this approach and Ford's ongoing commitment to improving the ownership experience.

To reflect real-world service operations, this year's contest allowed finalists to access Connected Vehicle data, enabling them to use vehicle operating information, diagnostic alerts, and technical records to support their troubleshooting process. This mirrors how Ford technicians increasingly use data-driven diagnostics in service centers to improve both efficiency and accuracy while delivering better outcomes for customers.

“A key measure of success is our ability to achieve Fix It Right First Time. Achieving this requires not only technical knowledge, but also analytical thinking, attention to detail, disciplined processes, and a commitment to doing the job right. Today's contest is designed to strengthen exactly these capabilities,” added Pradeep Jaiswal.

Investing in People to Strengthen Service Excellence

Today, Ford Thailand has 876 technicians nationwide, including 350 advanced-level diagnostic technicians certified at the highest level of diagnostic expertise. Through structured certification pathways and ongoing development programs, Ford continues to strengthen the capabilities of its service workforce and prepare technicians to support increasingly advanced vehicle technologies.

From Competition to Customer Care

For Sarawut Lamul, an L3 Technician at Ford RMA Hua Mak in Bangkok and winner of the 2026 Ford Technician Skill Contest, the achievement reflects years of continuous learning and determination. After earning an honorable mention in last year's contest, he returned this year with a stronger focus on improving his weaknesses and refining his diagnostic approach.

Sarawut believes the competition directly contributes to better customer service by strengthening analytical thinking and decision-making under pressure.

"One of the most important lessons I've learned is to diagnose systematically and avoid making assumptions. Every time a customer brings in a vehicle, we need to understand the actual problem and the customer’s concern. Ford's technology helps us access more detailed vehicle data, allowing us to identify root causes more accurately and connect them to what the customer is experiencing. Ultimately, that helps us deliver a better repair outcome for the customer."

As this year's champion, Sarawut will represent Thailand at the upcoming international Ford Technician Skill Contest.

"I enjoy competition because it challenges me to keep learning and improving. For the international contest, I will continue refining every aspect of my work, sharpening my skills, and upholding Ford's service standards so I can represent Thailand to the best of my ability."
