Ford Philanthropy Supports Urgent Flood Relief in Eastern Cape, South Africa

In the aftermath the floods that recently devastated part of South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Ford Philanthropy is supporting the humanitarian efforts led by Gift of the Givers. The scale of destruction is unprecedented - entire communities have been displaced, infrastructure has collapsed, and more than 100 lives have been lost. The true extent of the tragedy continues to unfold as search and rescue teams recover more victims and reach isolated areas.

Gift of the Givers was on site from day one, delivering urgent aid in the hardest-hit areas of Butterworth and Mthatha. Around 4,000 people are being fed daily in community halls that have been turned into temporary shelters. In addition to hot meals, the organisation is supplying bottled water, hygiene products, baby care kits, blankets, and mattresses to those in need.

The road to recovery will be long, with ongoing needs for food, clothing, and other forms of support.
