Mustang FX Package Delivers Fox Body Fix for Enthusiasts. Vote for Your Favorite Mustang Era Now!

Jun 07, 2025

The Fox Body era has become one of the most popular in Mustang history, and Ford’s designers went to great lengths to ensure the Mustang FX Package, a new appearance package inspired by the third-generation Mustang, lives up to expectations. From the addition of an Adriatic Blue Metallic color (available across the 2026 Mustang lineup), inspired by the 1980s-era Mustang, to new upholstery and white wheels, the new package is brimming with touches of Mustang heritage inside and out.

While younger enthusiasts might need the 'Fox Body' reference explained – it identifies the platform that underpinned Mustangs and many other Ford vehicles for over two decades – the core audience for Mustang FX today are those in their 40s and 50s who remember these cars from their youth, including Senior Exterior Designer Stefan Taylor.

This car is more of a nod to the Fox Body era than a complete historical copy and paste.

“It’s easy to fall into the heritage part of it, but we wanted to pull something from Mustang’s heritage that allowed us to do something innovative,” Taylor said.

Mustang FX takes nostalgia to a new level. It will be available in the full palette of color options, but the new teal hue – inspired by a 1993 Mustang Cobra of a similar shade belonging to Ford’s Heritage Fleet – was added after Taylor and others from the design team lobbied for its inclusion. The package also includes a standard Fox Body gauge cluster, which was originally introduced when the seventh-generation Mustang debuted in 2022.

Blending past and future

The throwback effects extend into the car’s interior colors and materials. The Fox Body-era plaid fabric seat inserts were re-created using modern materials and techniques, which create a similar look and feel. Taylor said he and Color and Materials Designer Kristen Keenan emphasized the use of contrasting colors to fit the car’s retro aesthetic. That includes the car’s perforated leather inserts, which replicate the plaid inserts of the 1980s through dual-contrast stitching featuring City Silver and Adriatic Blue threads used on the seats, dash, door panels, steering wheel, and center console.

The Mustang FX package has two wheel options: a bold, aerodynamic wheel and a split, five-spoke option. Both were designed to balance aesthetics with functional requirements such as brake cooling and showcasing the brake calipers, Taylor said. Their Oxford White color comes with color-matched center caps, a trademark of the Fox Body’s heyday.

The retro cues are capped off by a special new patented Mustang wordmark that combines modern and nostalgic design. The new insignia, inspired by a wordmark included on the front and rear of late Fox Body-era Mustangs and developed especially for Mustang FX, can be found in various locations on the new car. Most notably, that includes a vinyl sticker on the rear window, just beneath the high-mount rear brake light.

It’s all about pushing the boundaries for Mustang.

Taylor has worked on several Mustang programs, including California Special, Mustang Dark Horse, and the 60th Anniversary Mustang, in the past.

“This one was cool because there was no assignment on this one. This just kind of came out of our heads because it seemed cool.”

Mustang FX will be available on GT Premium models when ordering for the 2026 Mustang lineup opens on June 24.
