Video: Ford Ranger Takes on Ranger PHEV in the Rough, but Which Pickup Wins?

Apr 28, 2025

DUNTON, UK – With 690 Nm of torque on tap, Ford’s all-new Ranger PHEV delivers more pulling power than any other Ranger currently on sale, but how does it compare with diesel- and petrol-powered Rangers when the going gets tough?

To find out, Ford Pro took a Ranger PHEV and a 2.0-litre diesel Ranger to Spain for a head-to-head off-road showdown. Check out this video to see what happens.

Filmed on private land near Barcelona, with the beautiful mountains of Montserrat in the background, the three-minute video shows the two vehicles take on a towing challenge, tug-of-war, off-road hill climb trial and much more.

Ranger PHEV’s all-new powertrain combines Ford’s 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine and 10‑speed automatic gearbox with a 75 kW electric motor and an 11.8 kWh (usable) battery. The resulting 690 Nm of torque is the highest of any production Ranger ever, and with 279 PS the PHEV variant produces more power  than a Ranger 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel.

A new Modular Hybrid Transmission integrates Ranger PHEV’s e-motor into the bellhousing to enable hybrid driving. The battery takes less than four hours to charge using a single-phase 16-amp charger to deliver a targeted range of over 45 km in EV-only mode.

Ranger PHEV operators will continue to be able to carry a payload up to one tonne, tow up to 3,500 kg and benefit from the off-road confidence delivered by Ranger’s latest e-4WD system, dual-range transfer box and rear differential lock.
