How One South African Mother Is Changing Mobility for Millions

Dec 08, 2025

Sometimes change begins with a single moment of empathy. For Amanda Tlotlisang Mokoena, that moment came the day she watched mothers walk kilometres with babies tied to their backs just to reach a clinic. Later, when her own daughter was born prematurely, the struggle to access safe, reliable transport made one truth impossible to ignore. Mobility is not just about getting from A to B - it is about survival, dignity, and the chance to thrive.

From this deeply personal experience, Amanda founded GLOW Movement and its flagship initiative, MobiMom.com which is a platform that connects mothers to vetted, trained women drivers who offer more than a ride. They offer safety. Compassion. And a sense of being cared for in moments when it matters most.

Many of these drivers are mothers themselves. Women like Mirriam from Soweto, who once carried a young mom’s hospital bag, waited while she collected medication, and phoned her the next day to make sure she was okay. Acts of kindness like this are not in the job description but they are woven into the heart of the movement.

Today, that heart is beating louder than ever. Amanda was selected as one of 26 global innovators in the 2024–2025 Ford Philanthropy Mobility Fellowship, chosen from more than 940 applicants across eight countries. Her work reflects the very purpose of the Fellowship, creating mobility solutions that uplift communities, expand opportunity and restore dignity.

With Ford Philanthropy’s support, Amanda is scaling her vision which is building a 100% women-driver network, expanding into rural and urban areas, and giving women pathways to financial independence and leadership.

As Amanda puts it: “Mobility is freedom. It means a mother never has to choose between feeding her family and getting her child to a hospital.”

And through this work, that freedom is becoming a reality - one mother, one driver, one journey at a time.
