Customers ‘Rush’ to Ford Dealers in Norway Ahead of VAT Changes

Nov 11, 2025

OSLO, Norway – Proposed changes to the VAT rates on new electric vehicles in Norway have triggered an unprecedented rush on Ford dealerships across the country.

The tax revisions, which are due to come into effect on January 1, 2026, would increase the on-the-road cost of an electric Ford by up to 4,000 Euros.

As savvy customers rush to beat the deadline, Ford Norway is pulling out all the stops to increase stock. And, this week, a huge vessel, dubbed the “VAT ship” docked in Drammen with more than 1,100 new electric Fords on board, including Explorer, Capri, Mustang Mach-E, Puma Gen-E and E-Transit Custom.

CEO of Ford Motor Norway, Per Gunnar Berg, told @Ford: “Once again, politicians have surprised the automotive industry and customers with major proposed changes at short notice. We have quickly turned around and secured good access to electric cars with delivery this year. With the interest we are experiencing now, it is definitely not worth waiting.”

Currently in Norway, electric vehicles priced under NOK 500,000 (42,000 Euros) are exempt from VAT. But the Government has announced plans to lower the limit to NOK 300,000 (25,000 Euros) with effect from January 1, 2026, adding NOK 50,000 (4,000 Euros) to the cost of an electric family car overnight.

“Even though the State Budget for 2026 has not been adopted, everything indicates that car taxes will generally increase - regardless of which drivetrain you want. As of now, we are able to deliver a car to anyone who wants to buy a new electric Ford with registration this year,” adds Ford Motor Norway's CEO.

“We have the entire Ford organization globally behind us, and we have good faith that we can register electric cars for all our customers who want them before the New Year. At the same time, we hope that the Government will change its mind – set the threshold for electric car VAT at NOK 400,000, and wait until at least April 1. This will make the transition to VAT on electric cars much easier and cleaner for both customers and us as an industry.”
