From Sketch to Starlight: A Customer-Centric “Instant Base Camp” Bridging Heritage and Tomorrow

Oct 09, 2025

Imagine a young family leaving the city behind on a Friday evening, the back of their Bronco Basecamp loaded with camping gear and fresh food for a weekend escape. By nightfall, they’ve transformed the cabin into a spacious bed, stargazing through the panoramic roof before drifting off to sleep. The next morning, the rear tailgate becomes their outdoor kitchen, powering a coffee maker and laying out breakfast with ease. Later, the same vehicle will carry them back through busy city streets in quiet, all-electric comfort.

“This vehicle,” as Max Wolff, Design Director of Ford China and IMG explains, “was developed primarily for this market. The choices we made were based around how Chinese customers live - day to day during the week, then short camping trips or even longer road trips. It’s still very capable off-road, but it’s also designed to appeal to a broader audience.”

Created entirely by the Ford China Design Center and produced locally, the Bronco Basecamp responds directly to the needs of Chinese customers who seek to reconnect with nature, release the pressures of daily life, and enjoy vehicles that double as both reliable urban companions and versatile “instant base camps.” As the first-ever electrified Bronco in 60 years, it blends this customer-driven vision with the rugged DNA that has defined the Bronco since its debut - proving that even in the electric age, adventure is never out of reach.

Bringing the Bronco into the Era of Electrification

In its 60-year history, the Bronco has stood as a symbol of freedom, capability, and outdoor spirit. The Bronco Basecamp marks the boldest chapter yet - one that electrifies the Bronco without diluting its essence. This is the first Bronco ever designed outside North America, and the decision to entrust the Ford China Design Center was intentional.

China’s fast-growing embrace of electrification, coupled with a thriving outdoor culture, made it the perfect place to reinterpret this American legend for a new generation of drivers. The design process was guided by Ford’s Human-Centred Design approach, immersing the team in the lifestyles, aspirations, and outdoor habits of Chinese customers. Research revealed a desire for a vehicle that could be both a dependable urban partner and a weatherproof “instant base camp” - a versatile, comfortable space ready for spontaneous escapes.

From the earliest sketches, the team focused on carrying over the Bronco’s traditional cues while introducing a new design language fit for electrification - rugged yet modern, unmistakably Bronco yet forward-looking in technology and feel.

Where Heritage Meets Electrified Innovation

The Bronco Basecamp’s exterior is a masterclass in balancing tradition with progress. It retains the unmistakable Bronco form: upright stance, strong shoulders, and muscular wheel arches - visual signatures that communicate strength and off-road readiness. These are not nostalgic flourishes; they are functional expressions of Bronco DNA.

For the EV age, the design team introduced cleaner, tauter surfaces, stripping away unnecessary lines to create a modern, muscular aesthetic. At the front, an illuminated BRONCO grille spans the width, connecting updated digital headlamps via a distinctive light bar. Across the front, the Bronco name stretches proudly across the illuminated grille, visually widening the stance while reinforcing the vehicle’s confident presence.

Aerodynamics, a crucial consideration for range and efficiency, are seamlessly integrated into the design. The Aero-Bridge channels air through the front fascia to reduce drag without compromising the Bronco’s rugged proportions. As Wolff notes, Innovations like the Aero-Bridge, unseen before in this segment, allowed designers to preserve the Bronco’s signature boxy silhouette while improving aerodynamic efficiency to meet ambitious range targets.

Where Rugged Capability Meets Everyday Comfort

Step inside the Bronco Basecamp, and the connection to its heritage is immediate. The interior preserves the Bronco family’s classic off-road DNA while introducing a luxurious, futuristic electrified aesthetic. Clean, crisp surfacing and carefully considered spatial strategies create a premium intelligent cockpit that blends technological innovation with everyday driving comfort.

The pop-up roof maintains the beloved open-air Bronco experience while adding height and ventilation in a more comfortable, climate-controlled way - letting occupants feel connected to nature without compromising rest.

Practicality continues at the rear with the tailgate workstation. This multifunctional hub reinterprets the American tailgating tradition for Chinese lifestyles - a fold-out tabletop, magnetic panel, measurement scale, power outlets, and bottle opener create an instant outdoor kitchen or workspace.

Additionally, built for versatility and convenience, the car features eight hooks and 12 attach points pre-installed in the trunk – with four additional hooks in the 120L frunk on the pure EV model, allowing users to easily add accessories and organize storage - whether for camping gear, sports equipment, or daily essentials.

Every latch, mounting point, and tie-down was deliberately designed with real-life use in mind, ensuring the Bronco Basecamp supports the many ways customers cook, camp, load, and explore with ease.

Crafting a Nature-Inspired, Customer-Centric Experience

At its core, the Bronco Basecamp’s color, material, and finish (CMF) story is theme-led, designed to give every customer “something for everyone” - from everyday comfort to rugged adventure, each theme reflects a different lifestyle.

This exploration led to the development 5 key interior colour Themes which drafts a journey from urban to wild and certainly a tale of adventure that the customers can connect with.

As a choice focused on daily practical scenarios, the MOONPACK theme is built around a low-contrast black-and-grey color scheme, creating an interior space that balances versatility and a tech-forward vibe.

Tailored for progressive outdoor enthusiasts with agile lifestyles, the TRAIL GREEN theme  features a muted winter green hue complemented by dark lower trim. This fresh, natural color palette not only infuses the cabin with trendy vitality but also creates a vibrant, lively atmosphere

The CANYON BLITZ theme draws inspiration from the Baja racing scene, featuring a classic tan-and-black color combination accented by eye-catching orange details. This robust color pairing not only echoes the vehicle’s performance DNA but also ignites consumers’ desire to go out to the wild.

“This is the most premium Bronco interior ever,” says Wolff. “We wanted to execute familiar graphics, shapes, and key visuals, but change the material techniques - bringing in softer, more tactile finishes while keeping everything durable and easy to clean.”

On the outside, the exterior color palette unmistakably showcases Bronco spirit while projecting modern EV confidence. Instantly recognizable colors such as the Iconic Cactus Grey and Performance inspired Flare Orange bookmark the Exterior Offering. The all-new Moon Bay Blue - designed exclusively for this project - pays homage to iconic Bronco blues of the past, drawing direct inspiration from the pure waters of Lake Kanas in Xinjiang, China, while Oasis Green connects fashion with nature. Together with timeless Crystal Pearl White and Panther Black, the palette gives every customer a personal expression of freedom, capability, and style.

In total, the team developed six exterior color palette and four key interior color themes, weaving a tale of adventure that customers can connect with. Each interior color theme can be matched with any of the exterior colors, however the design team still have their recommendations.

Panther Black looks great across all interiors but when paired with the MARS RUNNER interior, makes for a striking and thrilling combination. The TRAIL GREEN interior paired with either Oasis Green or Cactus Grey delivers the outdoor appeal, whilst the White and the Moon Bay Blue delivers a modern clean simplicity when selected with the MOONPACK interior. Badlands’ exclusive CANYON BLAZE interior with Flare Orange becomes the definitive combination for discerning enthusiasts.

Bronco Basecamp proves that electrification can amplify, not diminish, the soul of a legend. Grounded in six decades of off-road heritage and shaped by the insights of today’s drivers, it stands as a symbol of freedom, capability, and customer-focused innovation - ready to explore the future without forgetting where it came from.
