Editor’s note: @FordOnline recently awarded a five-day loan of the Mustang Mach-E to the winner of the I See a Mach-E contest. This article is a review of the vehicle and has been edited for publication.
While I’ve experienced electric vehicles before, I had never had the opportunity to drive one for an extended period. My main objective with the Mustang Mach-E was to get a sense of what living with an electric vehicle is like, especially the charging experience, because the electric revolution is no longer the future – it’s here now.
My main concern regarding electric vehicles was charging. As the owner of a gas-powered car, I’m used to quick fill-ups at the corner gas station when the light comes on, and I didn’t think there was an easy and convenient way to keep the charge in an electric vehicle. Yet over the course of a cold and snowy January week, I had no issues running errands and having more than enough range to take the road less traveled back home. I kept the Mach-E plugged in overnight, which typically got me to full charge by the next day.
Finding compatible chargers was also way easier than I expected. I was able to find some chargers in my local downtown area, which allowed me to charge up as I shopped. With a growing charging infrastructure, finding a power source will only become easier.
Despite being a performance junkie, I found myself primarily using the whisper mode on the Mustang Mach-E. The lack of engine noise gives the car a more luxurious and comfortable feel than I was expecting, and the instant acceleration and lack of engine lag is something I never felt in any Ford product.
The interior adds luxury touches as well. I really enjoyed tinkering with the different colors of ambient footwell lights, and found the driving position and seats to be perfectly comfortable. The all-glass panoramic roof is a sight to behold, especially at night. Being greeted by the iconic Mustang pony projected onto the ground every time I approached the car is also something I was not expecting, and it gave me a huge smile the first time I saw it illuminating my driveway.
The infotainment display was also a pleasant surprise. While I’ve been content with the 8-inch screens on my last few cars, unsure why anyone would ever need a 15.5-inch screen, after just a few drives, I was comfortable using it and personalizing it to display what I needed most. This large screen is extremely useful in displaying battery consumption, such as usage per trip, and how much range remains. It helped me become more conscious of my driving habits to maximize battery life.
By the end of the loan period, I had grown accustomed to life with an electric vehicle and was sad to see the Mustang Mach-E go. Everything about the experience surpassed my expectations and proved to me that the electric revolution is here to stay. You can balance iconic performance with an eco-friendly product.
