Vote for Classic Ford Bronco to Benefit Veterans Returning Home

1973 Ford Bronco could soon be seeing new life as a rebuild, courtesy of a Detroit radio station and a local Ford dealer. WCSX (94.7 FM) morning show host “Big” Jim O’Brien is taking votes on which of several classic cars should be rebuilt and raffled as part of the station’s annual Stone Soup Project. The Bronco is among them.

The winning vehicle will be re-created, while raising donations for Vets Returning Home, a local charity helping area veterans with housing, food and other necessities. Now in its 20th year, the Stone Soup Project has raised more than $1.2 million for local charities.

“The goal is to sell as many tickets for charity as possible, and there’s not a hotter vehicle on the planet than the Bronco,” said O’Brien. “To have a 1973 Bronco available for the Stone Soup Project is unbelievable.”

The Bronco, donated by Bill Brown Ford of Livonia, Michigan, is a work in progress. The dealership purchased it in late 2020 from a Ford employee who restores Broncos, intending to restore the vehicle then auction it off for Vets Returning Home. The 1973 Bronco arrived as a shell and the Bill Brown team began the restoration process, including acquiring panels and parts from various sources, as well as purchasing and installing a motor.

“The biggest challenge so far has been the sheet metal and welding those panels together,” said Hailee Wakar-Cichy, digital marketing coordinator at Bill Brown Ford. “It’s near and dear to my heart and I can’t wait to see it finished.”

But with business at the dealership on the upswing of late, the team has not been able to put as much time into the rebuild. If the Bronco is selected by O’Brien’s followers, project volunteers will help continue the restoration effort.

“This is a great marriage of resources to move this project along faster,” said Robert Goodfellow, digital marketing manager for Bill Brown Ford. “The one thing I love about working here is that there’s a great philanthropic commitment. To donate this Bronco to the Stone Soup Project, this is something we love to do. This is just the tip of the iceberg.”

When it comes to the all-new Ford Bronco, Bill Brown Ford, recently named No. 1 Ford dealer in the world based on sales volume, is moving them out as soon as they arrive. “As many as we can get, they are just going right back out the door,” said Goodfellow.

The vehicle selected for the Stone Soup Project will be unveiled in March before its appearance at the annual Woodward Dream Cruise this summer.
