Ford Unleashes First-Ever Ranger Raptor; Built Ford Tough and Loaded with Ford Performance DNA

The first-ever Ranger Raptor, Ford’s new off-road, performance pick-up truck, blasted out from behind its camouflage during a reveal event in Bangkok on February 7.

Purposefully designed, built and tested to set a benchmark as the only factory-built performance truck across Asia Pacific, the ultimate Ranger was designed by the Ford Performance team for true off-road enthusiasts and strengthens Ford’s commitment to deliver Built Ford Tough pickup trucks to customers in Asia Pacific.

“We are so excited and proud to unleash this vehicle to the public, driving it really makes you feel like a hero,” said Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer, Ford Performance. “The Ford Performance team is excited to extend the Raptor name from our flagship off-road performance F-150 to Ranger. Just like the F-150 Raptor, the Ranger Raptor builds upon the core capability of the range of vehicles it comes from and carries the unmistakable Ford Performance DNA appearance.”

Bold Design

The Ranger Raptor features a stunning new grille with the iconic FORD lettering inspired by the F-150 Raptor, while the flared front fenders and oversized tires not only look tough, they allow for the long travel suspension that is so integral to Ranger Raptor’s off-road durability.

Inside, Ranger Raptor offers a tailored Ford Performance DNA interior design with a high level of craftsmanship, harmonious colors and durable materials suitable for both off-road driving and everyday use.

In the cockpit, the aggressive cluster, distinctive steering wheel and high performance seats encourage adventurous driving but also provide superior on-road comfort.

Frame, Brakes and Suspension

Built using high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, the Ranger Raptor’s unique frame is specifically designed to withstand the impacts of high speed off-road racing. The truck’s braking system has also been tuned for the extreme, with bespoke components such as large twin-piston calipers offering optimized stopping ability.

Raptor’s race-bred suspension has been specifically crafted to tackle undulating terrain at high-speed while still allowing the driver to remain in complete control and comfort. The Fox Racing Shox dampers have been finely calibrated for every on- or off-road eventuality.

“The standout experience of the Ranger Raptor, hands down, is how far you can push it off-road versus any other available production road vehicle in our markets, and still ride like a millionaire on-road,” said Damien Ross, Chief Program Engineer, Ranger Raptor, Ford Motor Company.

“Everything about the Ranger Raptor builds on the already outstanding sophisticated feel and functional capability of the Ranger, and then goes further. From a driving dynamic fun standpoint, it is really an exceptionally special vehicle.”

Tuned for all Terrains

All-terrain BF Goodrich 285/70 R17 tires have been specially developed for the Ranger Raptor to keep it aggressive and stable on- and off-road. It’s also been fitted with a unique new bash plate to offer complete underbody protection.

Meanwhile the truck’s Terrain Management System (TMS) offers six modes for various driving experiences, each calibrated to offer the best possible driving experience. These include Normal, Sport, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Sand, Rock and Baja mode.

Raw Power

In a revolutionary move to deliver incredible performance and responsiveness, a new 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo diesel engine is combined with a 10-Speed transmission in the Ranger Raptor to deliver a maximum of 213PS (157kW) and 500Nm of torque.

The smaller, high-pressure turbo is connected in sequence to the larger turbo and is controlled with by-pass valves that determine the operating mode depending on engine speed. At lower speeds, the two turbos work in series, enhancing torque and responsiveness, while at higher speeds it provides a boost to deliver more power.

It is paired with the Ford-designed and Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission which allows for agile acceleration and responsiveness by optimizing gear ratios and even includes a ‘Live in Drive’ function, meaning that the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are always available for manual gear selection override.

Practical Technology at Hand

Ranger Raptor comes with a host of advanced Driver Assist Technologies (DATs) at the push of a button, including:

  • Fully integrated SYNC 3 connectivity with voice activation and satellite navigation
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Trailer Sway Control
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Load Adaptive Control
  • Rear view camera
  • EZ Lift Tailgate
  • Intelligent Access

“It is amazing to enable this level of performance and create a vehicle that can provide off-road enthusiasts such an adrenaline rush,” said Hameedi.

“It really is like a motocross bike, snowmobile and an ATV rolled up into a pickup truck – it’s an incredible, awesome experience!”
