Trend: Ford Sales Lead in Utility Vehicle Sales Rising

DATE: Will be calculated from "Release Start Date" field.

DEARBORN – Ford’s leadership in utility vehicle sales in North America is well documented. In fact, a 10 percent rise in sales from 2012 to 2013 made Ford North America’s top-selling utility vehicle brand for the seventh-consecutive year. What is notable however, is the rise in popularity of utilities globally, both for the industry as a whole and for Ford in particular.

With a 37 percent increase in global utility vehicle sales in 2013 – which is more than twice the segment growth rate, Ford was able to break records in yet another sales category.

“Ford is not only the best-selling utility brand in North America for the seventh year in a row, but also is a driving force behind the adoption of utilities in the rest of the world, where Ford utilities grew 126 percent in 2013, relative to a 20 percent increase for the segment.” said Jim Farley, executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service and Lincoln during a recent media forum on the topic of utility sales.

Farley also noted that on average one out of every five vehicles sold today is a crossover or an SUV. In Russia, sales of crossovers and SUVs are even more profound with one in every three vehicle sales coming from this segment.

The Ford Escape/Kuga and Ford EcoSport have been driving the sales growth all over the world with results Farley characterized as ”breathtaking.” In China for instance, 2013 Escape/Kuga sales rose 1,804 percent over 2012. In southeast Asia, 2013 sales of Ford utility vehicles were up 114 percent over 2012, and the introduction of the EcoSport to drivers in Europe, China and India helped sales of that model soar 229 percent.

For the thousands of employees of the ten manufacturing facilities located throughout the world dedicated to building utilities, this sales success equates to security and pride in a job well done.
