PRETORIA, South Africa —Team Ford Racing 2012 faced a tough challenge at the Bridgestone Production Car Championship, which took place at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria, but emerged with three podium finishes.
It was clear from the outset that the competition was going to be tight with just 0.415 seconds separating the top five competitors in qualifying. The two Ford Focus ST’s of Gary Formato and Shaun Duminy emerged in fifth and sixth place respectively at the end of a close fought qualifying session.
The team got off to a promising start with Formato moving up to third place and Duminy to fourth in the opening heat. In the second heat the pair continued to improve and once again moved up the ranks with Formato claiming second place and Duminy joining him on the podium with a third place finish.
The team was upbeat ahead of the final heat of the day.
Formato was looking strong in third place but his tyre began to delaminate forcing him into seventh place.
Duminy also fell back in the closing stages as a fuel pump failure forced him to slow. He hung on to take fifth place as the final flag fell.
“We struggled at the end, but overall we are pleased with the results of the day and we’ll continue to work on improving the cars for the final rounds of the season,” said Duminy.
With two more rounds remaining, Formato will be aiming to r. etain his second place position in the rankings while Duminy is aiming to secure third place.
The next round of the championship takes place at Killarney Raceway in Cape Town on 22 September.
Shaun Duminy continued to accumulate points with a podium and two solid point finishes.
