March for Babies Walk

he UAW and Ford are joining together to help support the March of Dimes. Why walk? Because right now, premature birth touches half a million babies and their families every year. Because babies born too soon are more likely to die or have lifelong disabilities. Because 120,000 babies are born with serious birth defects every year. Because every baby deserves someone in their corner. With your support, the March of Dimes is here for all babies -- those born healthy and those that need help to survive and thrive.

The 2013 March of Dimes walk will be held at Hines Park

Sterling Axle Plant's 2013 Roof Repair and Replacement Program
May 17, 2013

Roofing Repair work will take place from Monday, May 20, 2013 to Friday, June 28, 2013. The areas affected will roughly be Bay D15 to Bay L23. Most of the roofing work will be contained with active construction zones which have limited access.

There will be limited work over F-aisle and over Dept. 58 Marketplace. No work will take place over active production areas. Temporary protection will be provided over any areas not contained within active construction zones. The protection will be in the form of a tarp hung at truss level to collect any fallen debris.

Surrounding areas may experience some odor from the hot coal-tar roofing materials. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause; however, everyone’s cooperation will contribute to a successful roof repair project that will benefit the entire plant.

Click here for a diagram of the affected areas.

Ford Posts First Quarter Pre-Tax Profit of $2.1 Billion, Driven by Highest North America Profit in More than a Decade; Net Income of $1.6 Billion
April 24, 2013

Congratulations to the entire Ford team for continuing to deliver our One Ford plan, serving our customers around the world and delivering profitable growth.  Thanks to our efforts, we today are announcing strong quarterly financial results, built on solid growth in volume and revenue.

Our earnings are driven by our highest North American profit since at least 2000 – when we began reporting results for the region as a separate business unit – and continued solid performance from Ford Credit.

Our results reflect more proof that our investments in Asia Pacific Africa are paying off, as we post record first quarter market share in the region and in China.  They also reflect continued implementation of our transformation plan in Europe – which is on track to return to profitability by mid-decade – as well as expanding our global product portfolio and working on all areas of the business for further improvement in South America, as we address the challenging business environment in that region. Click here to read full article.

Maintenance Announcement
April 17, 2013

From Wednesday, April 24 until mid-July, all the fluorescent light fixtures with T12 lamps in office areas and in the plant (below the truss space), the powerhouse and other buildings on the site will be retrofit with new ballasts and T8 lamps (note: a T12 lamp is 1.5” in diameter, a T8 lamp is 1” in diameter). We need to do this in that T12 lamps are no longer manufactured and replacement lamps are getting scarce and expensive.

From mid-July until September 30, all the 8’ fluorescent fixtures with T12 lamps mounted in the truss space in active areas of the plant will be replaced with new 4’ fixtures with T8 lamps.

Doing this will reduce the plant’s annual energy cost by nearly $300,000.

As all this work is being done, you may at some point experience some brief, minor inconvenience and for this, we will appreciate your cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Bill Deady.

Non-Ford Vehicle Parking Policy for Sterling Axle Plant
Updated Feb 25, 2013

Effective Monday, March 4, 2013, all non-Ford vehicles are to be parked in the southwest corner of the south parking lot (corner of 17 mile and Mound Rd). Non-Ford vehicles that do not have a new hire parking pass (available for entry level/new hire employees only) will be stickered by Security and Labor Relations will be notified.

Effective immediately, entry level/new hire employees driving non-ford vehicles will be issued a pass making them eligible to park in any parking area. The pass will be valid for a period of one (1) year from the date of hire and excludes foreign vehicles. This gives new hires a 1-year period of time from date of hire before this policy is strictly enforced, allowing them time to purchase a Ford vehicle.

Air Quality Division and Ford Sterling Plant Work Together to Address Odor Issues
February 20, 2013 (@Ford Online)

Below is a story which appeared in the Winter 2013 edition of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s (MDEQ) internal e-publication, DEBQubicle, regarding recent efforts to resolve an odor issue at Ford’s Sterling Axle facility. The article was written by Rem Pinga, Air Quality Division, Southeast Michigan District Office.

DEARBORN - As an inspector with the Air Quality Division, part of my job is responding to odor complaints.  Identifying the source of the odor and finding a solution can be a difficult task. However, my recent experience with the Ford Motor Company Sterling facility (Ford Sterling) proves that a lot can be accomplished through partnership and good communication.

For several years, the AQD’s Southeast Michigan District Office would receive intermittent natural gas odor complaints from citizens, Consumers Energy and the City of Sterling Heights Fire Department.

During one of the complaint episodes, I met with representatives from the City of Sterling Heights Fire Department, Consumers Energy and Ford Sterling to discuss and address more than 50 citizen natural gas odor complaint calls that Consumers Energy had received and responded to, without discovering a leak.  At that time, I was informed that this was an on again-off again situation that was costing Consumers Energy hundreds of man hours responding to  false gas leak complaints.  Consumers Energy suspected that the odor may be coming from the Ford Sterling facility’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
