Last month, Ford employees and retirees enjoyed a special offer on Ford Fusion Energi and Ford C-MAX Energi Plug-in Hybrids. Now AeroVironment, a preferred home charging provider for Ford, is sweetening the deal by offering employees special pricing on home charging solutions.
"The Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi each come with a Level 1 120-volt convenience cord that plugs into a standard electrical outlet and charges the vehicle in about 7 hours," said Joe Marini, manager, Electrification Consumer Marketing. "Switching to a Level 2 240-volt charging solution cuts the charge time by more than half and offers the customer enhanced vehicle functionality."
For those who drive the Fusion Energi or C-MAX Energi, Marini suggests the TurboCord™, which provides a cost-efficient, convenient solution.
"The TurboCord™ is the most appealing choice for our Energi customers because it is less costly than the other Ford-branded home charging stations and charges in the same amount of time," he explained. "The TurboCord™ is compact, easy to use, and may be conveniently taken along to be used at home, relatives’ or friends’ house, or anywhere with an available 240V outlet."
Marini said a 30A or 32A home charging station is a better choice for someone who drives an all-electric vehicle like the Ford Focus Electric.
"For the majority of Focus Electric drivers who use their vehicle for a daily commute, the higher amperage home charging station may be a necessity," he said. "The 2014 Focus Electric fully charges in approximately 3.6 hours with a 30 or 32 Amp EV home charging station versus 20 hours with the standard 120-volt convenience cord."
Stephanie Janczak, manager, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering, said Level 2 charging solutions also allow for enhanced vehicle functionality.
"Using the MyFord Mobile App, customers can pre-condition their vehicle," she said. "They can program the car to use electricity from the grid to heat or cool the battery and cabin while it’s plugged in. So during the hot summer months, for example, customers can pre-program the car to be at a certain temperature by a designated time of the day. And it won’t affect the EV miles you can drive because it pulls the energy from the wall instead of the vehicle battery."
The shorter charge time provided by Level 2 charging solutions also enables customers to take better advantage of Utility Time of Use windows.
"There are some utilities that have Utility Time of Use windows, usually four to six hours overnight when electricity use is the lowest. We have a MyFord Mobile value charging feature that allows customers to reduce their electricity costs by taking advantage of off-peak or other reduced rates from their utility without a complicated set-up process,” said Janczak.
