DAYTONA -- This weekend’s Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway marks the 100th race for the Daytona Prototypes, the premier class of the GRAND-AM Rolex Series. Last year, the SunTrust racing team was able to take their No. 10 Ford Dallara into Victory Lane. Ricky Taylor talks about heading to Daytona and the progress his team has made so far this season.
Q. YOU HEAD TO DAYTONA FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON.
A. The 24 Hours is definitely one of a kind. You set the car up for 24 hours, not 2 hours and 45 minutes. When you go back there in the summer, the temperature is hotter and the car acts a little differently. Top speed is important because you have to race every lap like you’re in qualifying. Just going back there I have a little bit to learn about the downforce tracks as a driver, but I’m really excited to go back.
Q. YOU GUYS ARE DOING EXTREMELY WELL THIS SEASON WITH THREE POIDUM FINISHES AND A RACE WIN. YOU’RE CURRENTLY SECOND IN THE TEAM POINT STANDINGS. HOW DO YOU FEEL GOING INTO THE REST OF THE SEASON?
A. I think the SunTrust car has been really strong all year. This Ford engine, we’re getting as much power out of it as possible. I think the last three races are just being a matter of putting all of the pieces together and really showing what our possibilities there are for the rest of the year. I hope to keep doing what we’re doing. It’s possible that we could keep doing this for the rest of the year.
Q. DO YOU ENJOY RACING AT DAYTONA? IS IT ONE OF THOSE TRACKS YOU LOOK FORWARD TO?
A. The SunTrust team won there last year. I’m really excited to go back there. We were really strong there back in January. This race has a lot of history. The race is Fourth of July weekend so a lot of fans come out for it. I think it’s going to be a great race.
