DAYTONA -- The countdown towards the debut of Mustang in NASCAR is in the final days, so Ford Racing took the opportunity to get some final advance comments from drivers Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Carl Edwards before the car hits the track on Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway.
CARL EDWARDS – No. 60 Copart/Fastenal Ford Mustang
Q. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON FINALLY GETTING TO RACE A MUSTANG?
A. It would be really cool to win that first race at Daytona with the Mustang. I have a Mustang that I drive on the road. I like driving the Mustang. I mean, the people relate to the Mustang and they enjoy it. I’ve had more people excited about that car than any of the other changes we’ve done with the bodies or the spoilers or the wings. People are pumped about seeing Mustangs race, so I think it’s gonna be really neat.
Q. AS A MUSTANG OWNER DO YOU LIKE HOW THE STOCK CAR LOOKS?
A. Yes, the car looks really good to me. I think they did a really good job of capturing the lines of the Mustang. It’s like the Mustang you wish you had on the road. It’s really neat looking.
Q. HOW DOES THE MUSTANG RACE CAR FEEL COMPARED TO THE FUSION?
A. It drives differently, but Daytona is a tough place to tell. I think Michigan will be the real test, but right now it seems like the front-end grip is a little better, so that makes it looser. That’s going to make for a wild race.
RICKY STENHOUSE, JR. – No. 6 Blackwell Angus Beef Ford Mustang
A. YOU’VE HAD A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME DRIVING MUSTANG AT SOME TEST SESSIONS. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT FINALLY GETTING TO RACE THE CAR IN COMPETITION?
A. It’s gonna be awesome. The fans have heard about it and seen pictures of it, but not many of them have actually been there to watch it. It’s gonna be cool to have them all painted up because up until now they’ve all been in primer, so to have them painted with all the door decals and tailpipes on them like our Mustang has is gonna be awesome. Obviously, the night race at Daytona is a cool race anyway, and to have the new Mustang come out, which I think is the best-looking car out of the new Nationwide cars, I think the fans will agree and there’s just gonna be a lot of excitement going into it.
Q. AS A DRIVER ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT GETTING IN SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND WITH THE HERITAGE OF MUSTANG?
A. I’m definitely excited for it. I’ve been telling everybody about when you watched races back in the day they would just bring cars right off the street and race, so they looked exactly like what you could go and buy. I think that’s what we’re getting back to. I think the Mustang looks as close as it can to the Mustang that people can go out and buy at the dealership, and I think that’s more of what I’m excited about is being able to get back to the roots of racing.
Q. HAVE YOU HEARD FROM ANY FANS ABOUT THE LOOK OF THE NATIONWIDE MUSTANG?
A. I was at an appearance a few weeks ago and there were some members of the Mustang Club there and they were all excited. They told me that the whole Mustang Club was excited about it, so that’s cool that the Mustang Club is back into NASCAR. We’ve had the Fusion for a few years, but now that you can get Mustang back into the sport, it might invite fans that weren’t fans before. There are a lot of people and kids that are a fan of Mustang, but maybe not a fan of NASCAR. Now, I think we’ll be able to draw them in and turn them into big fans.
