ENGLISHTOWN -- This weekend, the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series heads to Englishtown, New Jersey for race 11 of 23. Ford Racing Engine Engineer Mose Nowland gives a mid-season update on the progress of the Ford Pro Stock Engine development program.
Q. CAN YOU US GIVE AN OVERALL UPDATE ON THE FORD PRO STOCK PROGRAM?
A. First of all, there have been no reported problems with the Ford basic engine components. We are having difficulties with supplier’s parts not being durable enough to beat the riggers that the engine requires right now. We did start out very optimistically because, before we had increased horsepower in the engines, they were looking very promising. In fact, they were on the threshold of being competitive. At Charlotte, we had all three Mustangs that were present at the track qualify that weekend. That was the last they qualified. Then we got into aftermarket component failures and things of that nature. We are disappointed, and we thought we would be further ahead than where we are now, but we are working with our suppliers to get the pieces to wear and be where they are dependable. We hope this weekend at Englishtown we will be back in the qualifying mode.
Q. WITH NHRA’S TESTING RESTRICTIONS YOU CAN’T DO A WHOLE LOT DURING THE SEASON. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS ON TESTING COMING UP?
A. Yes, we do. We’re going to take whatever time we’re allowed, in fact I’m right in the midst of it right now, of designing the list of experiments. That includes some wind tunnel and we’re going to do some track time with the car instrumented, and we’re going to get to the bottom of our weaknesses so that we can go back to work and correct them. That’s going to take place during the next two to three weeks. We actually have enough that it’s going to take us two or three weeks to do. We all have to realize testing is interrupted by weekends where we have to race, so maybe it will take longer than three weeks.
Q. I KNOW YOU SAID EARLIER THAT YOU’RE DISAPPOINTED, BUT THIS IS STILL A FAIRLY NEW PROGRAM.
A. That’s true, but I’m just impatient. We got the engine out there in record time and I just expected our success to be as fast, but compared to other programs that I’ve been in and other programs that our teams have been in, they fully understand that they are still in a development stage and they really feel this season will be a development season. So far, we’re 10 races into the season with a lot left to go, so hopefully we’ll get ourselves straightened out and be very competitive. The car is competitive. In fact, you mention the engine and vehicle being new and it is. That package is new from bumper to bumper. There’s a lot of areas in there that really haven’t be strained to their fullest extent yet, but we’re about to do it.
