CUMBRIA, England - Mikko Hirvonen’s co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen has become the fourth recipient of the Michael Park Award, in recognition of his outstanding performance in this year’s World Rally Championship.
The trophy is presented annually in memory of Michael Park, known as ‘Beef’, who died in a tragic accident during Wales Rally GB in 2005, while co-driving for his long-term partner Markko Märtin.
The award is made to a WRC co-driver who has best demonstrated the overall qualities associated with Michael during his career, taking into account overall performances, attitude, commitment and other specific actions or achievements.
Championship leader Jarmo was one of five co-drivers nominated for the award, with the likes of Phil Mills, Julien Ingrassia and Marc Marti also being shortlisted, but with a 2009 Championship CV including 10 podiums, four wins, two second places, and two third places, the Finn’s achievements stood out.
Lehtinen received the award from Park’s friend and manager, Paul Turner, in front of his Ford team-mates on Wednesday evening.
Hirvonen was quick to sing the praises of his team-mate, who has been integral to his championship bid this year. “He is one the best co-drivers in the world without a doubt,” he said. “We spend over 200 days a year together, so it’s key to have someone sat next to you in the car that you can trust, and I certainly trust Jarmo, he deserves this more than anyone.”
