Industrial Medical Team Wins President’s Health Award for Saving Life

DATE: Will be calculated from "Release Start Date" field.

CHONGQING, China — Dr. Xiao Yun, an industrial doctor and supervisor of the medical centre at Changan Ford's Chongqing Assembly Plant, together with nursing assistant Tan Xueqin, have won the Lifesaving Award of the Ford President's Health and Safety Awards (PHSA) after they resuscitated an employee who suffered a heart attack.

It was almost the end of an ordinary working day at the plant when Dr Xiao's on-site medical centre was visited by an employee, who complained of chest pains and discomfort.

After giving him a physical exam, Dr Xiao told him to rest in the waiting room. However, shortly after, the patient lost consciousness and his heart stopped beating. Dr Xiao and nurse Tan performed CPR on him immediately and managed to take him to hospital in a company car after reviving him.

"He passed out and was unconscious for less than a minute," said Dr Xiao, who has been working at the plant for nine years, "I visited him in hospital the next day, and the doctor there told me that he was suffering from heart disease and was struck by a heart attack."

Dr Xiao has been sending out an "Angel on Thursday" email for several years to maintain employee knowledge of general health knowledge and industry-related safety concerns. It was the second time for her team had to deal with a cardiac arrest case - a night-shift nurse revived an employee during a similar incident in 2010.

After receiving the award, Dr Xiao modestly praised the efforts made by the entire medical team, and most importantly, the company's constant emphasis upon employee health issues.

"I am just maintaining consistency with Ford's commitment of taking employee's health concerns as number one priority," she said. "Ford has been sharing with us  details of its medical cases around the world through a well-established training system in recent years, so our team members are well prepared for on-site first aid."

"May lifesaving techniques such as CPR are widely introduced not only to us, but to everybody in the company," Dr Xiao added.

The Ford President’s Health and Safety Awards are a chance to award those who work hard to prevent accidents, promote health and save lives. Besides Dr Xiao's medical team, the Nanjing-based Engine Plant and Research and Engineering Center was also awarded for their excellent performance on implementing safety regulations.
