Ford in the Press – Week ending 23.01.13

DATE: Will be calculated from "Release Start Date" field.

New Ford EcoSport, Kuga, B-MAX and new Mustang all feature prominently in Europe’s media this week. There’s also an interesting report about Ford’s pioneering work with 3-D printing…

Il Giornale di Vicenza (Italy) says new Ford EcoSport is “charming”. It adds: “The driver and four passengers are welcomed into a modern, luminous cabin with good finish quality. The EcoSport is available with the award-winning three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost engine with 125PS. Another option is the 1.5 TDCi 90PS, an efficient and silent diesel engine with excellent performance figures and fuel economy. The suspension strikes a perfect balance between performance and comfort. The EcoSport is well-equipped with infotainment features such as SYNC and AppLink. Ford’s designers took care of every aspect with the goal of positioning the EcoSport as a leader of its class.”

Lavoixdunord.fr (France) is even more impressed by EcoSport, reporting: “A sporty, fuel-efficient SUV that’s agile in the city, but also on curvy mountain roads. Ford’s recipe is almost too good to be true! After introducing the Kuga in 2008, the American brand wants to strengthen its position in the SUV market by launching the EcoSport across Europe. In Europe, where the SUV category is second only to that of city cars, Ford is betting on the EcoSport’s dual identity. On one hand, with its simple and refined lines, wide grille, ground clearance and rear-mounted spare tire, the EcoSport has crossover characteristics. But Ford’s model also makes for a versatile city car with its compact silhouette, high driving position and excellent visibility. Ford offers original exterior colors that really showcase the silhouette.”

Motorsiden (Denmark) test drives Ford Kuga and announces: “The Powershift gearbox is close to flawless and the way the car transfers the torque to whatever tire that needs the power the most is unique. The instrumentation panel looks like a spaceship but looks good at the same time. Lots of legroom in the backseat and a big boot, makes the car great for a family as well. As one of the only brands in the Danish market, Ford has heated windscreens in their cars, which is a total plus. At the same time it is one of the safest in the class.”

Motor 16 (Spain) flags the fact that new Ford Mustang will soon make its big screen debut: “Before it reaches the market, the new Ford Mustang will make its film debut in “Need for Speed,” a movie based on the successful video game series. Actor Aaron Paul will play Tobey, a street racer wrongfully accused of a crime. After two years in prison, he seeks revenge by competing in the biggest underground race of all time. On his quest, he races across the country in a tricked-out Mustang. Ford’s pony car has made more than 3,200 film and television appearances”

France’s L’Usine Nouvelle reports about Ford’s pioneering work with 3-D printing: “Ford is using 3-D printing to make cylinder heads and other parts. The Blue Oval introduced this technique, which has become a key part of its development process, to an audience at the Detroit Auto Show. Whereas the normal production time is three months, new parts can be created with 3-D printing in a matter of days. The entire series of EcoBoost engines was developed with 3-D printers. But Ford is looking even further into the future. Within a few years, customers will be able to print their own parts at home or have them printed at the brand’s dealerships.”

Autoevolution (Romania) is one of several publications announcing that Ford has produced its 100,000th B-MAX at Craiova: “Although MPVs might not be the hottest things on the road, they are still quite in demand. This is the case of Ford’s B-Max small MPV and the company’s assembly plant in Craiova, Romania where the 100,000th vehicle was built… All in all, it is quite a big achievement for Ford, General Manager Vehicle Operations, Ford Romania Vic Startek saying that the company is very proud of the B-Max and the fact that they have managed to reach this number (100,000) in just 18 months.”

Avotvil.si (Slovenia) likens Fiesta ST to a chile pepper: “Do you like chili? To enjoy it fully, you must use it thoughtfully. Just like Fiesta ST. Fiesta ST has a simple trick up its sleeve. It packs a powerful engine, but so do other cars. But Fiesta ST is fun. Really fun. Compared to it, similar cars are just (very) good and fast.  When you look at it, you see an aggressive sports car that is attractive and deserves a second look. Inside, you find a sport interpretation of Fiesta with aluminum pedals and orange details to break up the monotony of black color. However, you only need to pay attention to Recaro seats. The engine turns on and pampers your hormones. The sound reminds me of the sound of old airplane engines from WWII. It is easy to find the right position for the seats and the steering wheel, which could be a little smaller but is great for aggressive driving. You soon find that there is hardly a better way to sit.”

Denmark’s BilMagasinet compares Fiesta ST with Peugeot 208 GTi and Nissan Juke Nismo. The verdict? “The journalist had some expectations to Peugeot and Ford in this test, meanwhile Nissan only could surprise. Fiesta ST is once again the big and absolute winner. It is clearly the most complete GTi-like car. The seats and steering wheel makes the driving experience seem sublime and delightful even before rolling a single meter. On paper, 182 hp doesn’t seem like a lot, but Ford makes it perform like a car with a lot more power. When it comes to the steering, Ford is simply world-class at creating the right feeling for the driver. There is nothing bad to say about Fiesta ST and there is no doubt that it is the winner of this test.”

Spain’s Solo Furgo rates new Ford Transit Custom highly: “The Transit Custom is small and very comfortable to drive. It doesn’t handle like an oversized vehicle. The roomy cabin has great finish quality and a relaxed, high driving position. The driver can see everything clearly and easily locate the controls. The dashboard provides lots of useful information, and the multiple storage compartments make life easier. The Transit Custom stands out for its use of safety technology. It has an improved stability control system, more powerful brakes, hill start assistance and a rollover mitigation system. Other key features include Lane Departure Warning, Auto High Beam Control and Driver Alert. Our test unit was equipped with the 2.2 Duratorq TDCi 155PS, the most powerful engine in the range. It offers brilliant, balanced performance and very low fuel consumption.”

El Mundo (Spain) says new Ford EcoSport has “impressive abilities”, adding: “The compact SUV segment remains immune to the crisis, and now Ford is rolling out the EcoSport, a model developed on the same base as the Fiesta and imported from South America, where it has sold over 770,000 units. Love it or hate it, the EcoSport’s design won’t leave you feeling indifferent. According to Ford, this model brings together three qualities sought by customers: “country” style, connectivity features and SUV characteristics such as a high driving position and off-road capabilities.  Compared with the competition and despite using front-wheel drive, the EcoSport has impressive abilities on terrain. It boasts ground clearance of 200mm, approach and departure angles of 21 and 35 degrees, respectively, and wading depth of 550mm. On the road, the EcoSport is pleasant to drive and barely sways.”

Al Volante (Italy) praises EcoSport’s “bold new design”. It adds: “Ford’s new crossover has a bold exterior design. The spare tire on the tailgate harks back to the off-road vehicles of yesterday. The 20cm of ground clearance are useful on challenging surfaces, but the EcoSport has front-wheel drive. Spacious in relation to its 424cm of length, this Ford is agile and quiet. It performs well on city streets and long journeys. The 1.5-liter engine doesn’t offer high performance but stands out for its accelerations and smoothness. The noise only becomes excessive when it’s pushed to the max. The EcoSport relies on a good transmission with five short gears and precise shifting. It has predictable handling, decent grip, a uniform and well-calibrated steering system and controlled rolling. The equipment package justifies the price. The EcoSport comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, parking sensors, seven airbags, a radio with Bluetooth and voice control. Options include 17-inch wheels (250 euros) and beautiful leather upholstery (1,000 euros).”
