BRENTWOOD, England – In August, UK market leader Ford recorded its highest sales volume since 2006. Ford total vehicle sales were up 22.9 per cent, compared with August 2013, significantly beating the overall UK market, which increased by 10.1 per cent.
According to the official figures for August from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT):
- Fiesta and Focus are the number one and two best-selling cars
- Fiesta sales alone would place it fifth among the top-selling car makers
- Fiesta retail share of 9.2 per cent beats total retail share of rival car makers
- Transit is second overall best-selling nameplate, even ahead of rival’s top-selling cars
- Ford increased its total vehicle sales lead over its nearest rival by 88 per cent
Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, said: “In a healthy UK market, Ford is building strong sales momentum heading into September, when sales increase significantly due to the registration plate change.
“We are delighted that private customers have driven up our share of more profitable retail sales, which account for a higher proportion of registrations in September. In August our retail share of 16.3 per cent was the highest for more than five years and the highest ever recorded for August.”
The official figures released by the SMMT show that total car sales in August were up 9.4 per cent at 72,163 compared with August 2013. Ford’s August car sales were 11,231, up 25.6 per cent. For the year to date (end August) total UK car sales were 1,532,335, up 10.1 per cent compared with the same period in 2013, while Ford car sales for this period were 208,432, up from 197,933.
Fiesta sales of 4,657 in August were up 42.0 per cent, compared with August 2013. With total registrations of 83,664 for the year to date, the Fiesta is the UK best seller by a significant margin – more than 33,000 sales and 2.2 percentage points of market share ahead of its nearest non-Ford rival.
The strength in depth of Ford’s car range is demonstrated by Fiesta, Focus and Galaxy leading their segments in August while Ka, B-MAX, C-MAX and Kuga all placed second or third in segment.
UK commercial vehicle (CV) sales for the year to date were 219,209, up 12.8 per cent, compared with the same period in 2013. Total sales and share of Ford CVs were up in August and for the year to date (compared with 2013), at 3,651 and 24.0 per cent (3,236 and 22.4 per cent in August 2013) and 49,874 and 22.8 per cent (44,823 and 22.1 per cent, same period 2013), respectively.
Ford light commercial sales and share were also up in August and for the year to date, bolstered by the recent launches of the Transit Connect and the Transit Courier that are part of the extended Ford Transit family and, in this sector, joining the segment-leading Fiesta Van.
