COLOGNE, Germany – Ford new vehicle sales got off to a flying start in its two largest European markets – UK and Germany – in January.
In the UK, Ford led in overall, car and commercial vehicles sales in January. Ford’s overall market share was 14.1 per cent, 0.4 of a percentage point up year-on-year, and 4.5 percentage points of share ahead of its nearest rival. At 21,792 vehicles, Ford car sales grew by 11 percent. The Ford Fiesta and Focus were the No. 1 and No. 2 best-selling cars in the UK, while the Ford Transit and Transit Custom were the No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling commercial vehicles in the country.
Ford’s lead in the UK over its nearest rival in total vehicle sales more than doubled compared with January 2013, while its lead over its nearest rival in car sales grew by more than five times. In 2013, Ford completed its 37th successive year of new car sales leadership, and its 48th consecutive year of commercial vehicle sales leadership.
In Germany, Ford passenger car sales were up 42 per cent in January to 14,608 total vehicles, giving Ford a market share of 7.1 per cent – 1.7 percentage points up on January 2013, and the strongest improvement in sales of any of the Top 10 car brands in the country.
Ford sales in the retail segment of the market grew by a massive 85 per cent, with Ford retail share increasing by 3.1 percentage points to 7.7 percent, the brand’s highest January monthly retail share since January 2009.
Ford climbed four places compared with January last year to become Germany’s third-largest seller to retail customers in January.
Total sales for Ford Focus and B-MAX – which also are offered with Ford’s International Engine of the Year winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost advanced technology petrol engine – were particularly strong in January, up 15.6 percent and 37.2 percent respectively.
“This is a very encouraging start to 2014,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “The UK and Germany are not only Ford’s two largest European markets, they also are two of Ford’s largest markets globally. Both have very knowledgeable and discriminating customers, so this is another sign our new product push is resonating with customers.”
