COLOGNE, Germany – Who has the better models, Ford or Opel? That’s the question posed by Germany’s influential Auto Bild. To provide the answer, the publication tested nine comparable models from each company’s range. The result was a clear victory for the blue oval.

Mondeo Wagon v. Insignia Wagon

Conclusion: The Mondeo is not only the more practical, spacious and robust wagon, it is the better car in almost every aspect.

Focus v. Astra

Conclusion: The Focus is the finer car in this duel. It offers the more modern and agile engine as well as the more dynamic suspension. The Opel Astra counters with more space and slightly more comfort.

Fiesta v. Corsa

Conclusion: The Fiesta shows, how much fun a small-car can be. For that advantage it sacrifices a little interior space and practicality. In terms of driving and dynamics the Corsa is definitely behind.

 Kuga v. Antara

Conclusion: The Kuga achieves a total victory. It would be better for Opel to offer no SUV than to stick a Logo on a car that was initially developed for non-European markets.

Grand C-MAX v. Zafira

Auto Bild commented: “Because the Zafira was only available for a sitting test, the comparison with the Grand C-MAX does not enter into the overall rating. However, one valuation can be made: although Opel has renewed the Zafira Tourer it will have a difficult time; the competition has got tougher.”

Ka v. Agila

Conclusion: The Agila doesn’t offer as many gimmicks as the Ka, but with its extensive interior space, flexibility, better comfort and lower fuel consumption it passes the Ka without any effort.

Focus Wagon v. Astra Wagon

Conclusion: The Astra offers enough space, has plenty of storage capacity and drives safely. With similar interior space, the Focus has the more agile handling and the better engine. So the game ends in a draw.

C-MAX v. Meriva

Conclusion: The Meriva achieved a second draw for Opel, because it’s nippier and slightly more economical with almost the same flexibility. The C-MAX scores with more load capacity, a more dynamic suspension and better steering.

Mondeo v. Insignia

Conclusion: The Mondeo performs much better in almost every aspect, compared with his pretty average opponent. Notably, the roomy interior and the EcoBoost petrol put the Mondeo in a strong light.
