Ford Hosts ASEAN Debut of All-New EcoSport at 34th Bangkok International Motor Show; Continues Product-led Growth Strategy

DATE: Will be calculated from "Release Start Date" field.

BANGKOK, Thailand Ford is putting its class-leading B-segment vehicles in the spotlight at the 34th Bangkok International Motor Show, demonstrating its commitment to capture even more of the rapidly growing small car segment as the company continues with its aggressive growth plan in ASEAN markets.

Taking center stage at the Bangkok Show in its ASEAN debut is the al-new Ford EcoSport. The sporty, compact SUV is equipped with a 1.5-liter Ti-VCT naturally aspirated petrol engine that will deliver the same segment-leading fuel efficiency as the popular Ford Fiesta.

Reflecting its smart, urban character, the all-new EcoSport features the award-winning Ford SYNC voice-activated in-car connectivity system, giving drivers the convenience and flexibility of operating their digital media players and Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones via voice commands.

Media attending the Press Day were also given an exclusive preview of the new Fiesta – a refresh of Ford’s class-leading small car. The new Fiesta will continue to feature a range of smart, safe and green features and technologies, including the internationally award-winning EcoBoost 1.0-liter engine.

By highlighting the small car segment, Ford is underscoring its plan to further drive its momentum by entering even more volume segments across the region. The company remains committed to its goal of increasing worldwide sales to eight million vehicles a year by mid-decade.

Additionally, Ford expects 60 to 70 percent of its sales growth globally within this decade to come from the Asia Pacific region, with ASEAN playing a key role in this ongoing expansion.

ASEAN is such an important growth opportunity for Ford within our Asia Pacific region,” said Alan Mulally, president and CEO, Ford Motor Company. “Our plan and successful product-led transformation is helping to deliver even more segment-leading vehicles, like the all-new EcoSport and new Fiesta, that reflect our commitment to serve our customers with cars and trucks they truly want and value.”

Global vehicle, ASEAN production
With small-car practicality and the flexibility, spaciousness and agilty of an SUV, the all-new EcoSport delivers a segment-leading package of quality, safety, value, and fuel economy that benefits from a contemporary design which is not only stylish, but aerodynamically efficient.

The smart urban SUV will appeal to people with a strong streak of independence who love exploring the world at large.

In addition to Ford SYNC, the new EcoSport also features advanced technologies like Smart Keyless Entry, Ford Power Start and rear parking sensors, and is equipped with safety features such as dual front airbags and side curtain airbags, as well as Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

A truly global One Ford vehicle, the EcoSport was developed entirely in South America, underlining Ford’s world-class capability of leveraging global design and expertise to develop small-car models for growth markets.

For ASEAN, the EcoSport will be built at the company’s $450 million, state-of-the-art Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) facility in Rayong. The highly flexible FTM facility serves as the foundation for the next phase of growth in the ASEAN region, and is part of the company’s aggressive expansion currently underway across Asia Pacific.

FTM is Ford’s second plant in Thailand and one of nine new Ford plants that will open across the region by 2015 – representing the Company’s largest industrial expansion in more than half a century.  FTM is capable of building a diverse range of vehicles, with an initial annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles.

“Thailand is one of our key global production and export hubs, and an essential part of the Company’s overall global growth strategy in Asia Pacific,” said Dave Schoch, president, Ford Asia Pacific. “FTM plays a key role in supporting our current and future planned growth across the ASEAN region.”

Ford’s overall ASEAN sales rose 27 percent in 2012 to 87,623 units, the company’s best-ever full-year performance in the region.

New Fiesta features EcoBoost
Ford began its product-led transformation in ASEAN with the launch of the Ford Fiesta subcompact, which has been one of the key drivers of the company’s success in the region. Since its launch, the Fiesta has attracted a segment share of nearly 10 percent across ASEAN.

The new Fiesta, which Ford will launch later this year, is sharing the stage with the all-new EcoSport on the Bangkok Motor Show’s press day.

The new Fiesta will feature a redesigned exterior boasting a sporty new grille, and with all-new features and advanced technologies, including SYNC. It will also feature Ford’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine – named 2012 “International Engine of the Year” – which offers best-in-class fuel economy, while delivering the power of a bigger engine.

“Fuel efficiency is one of the biggest purchase considerations for consumers across the ASEAN region,” said Matt Bradley, president, Ford ASEAN. “The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will give consumers yet another choice of class-leading powertrains for the Fiesta, and yet another reason to connect with the popular Fiesta.”

The Ford Fiesta has been a sales champion for Ford in ASEAN, thanks to its sporty design, class-leading fuel efficiency, excellent safety, and smart technologies.

In 2012, the Fiesta was Ford’s best-selling nameplate across ASEAN, including record full-year sales in Thailand, and the best-selling five-door hatchback in its class for a second consecutive year in the Philippines.
