KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Ford announced the winner for the Malaysia campaign of its Global Ford Ranger Challenge on the launch day of its segment-defining all-new Ranger.
The winner, IT technician Wong Kok Wei, drives away with the ultimate prize – an all-new Ford Ranger XLT 2.2L with manual transmission, worth close to RM90,000. Wong, a Taiping native currently working in Penang, was one of five finalists chosen from nearly 300 submissions from Malaysian consumers, all looking to put the all-new Ranger to their version of the ultimate, real-life challenge.
In his winning challenge entitled Planet Earth’s New Hero, Wong tested the all-new Ford Ranger’s torque, stability and steering capabilities, while manoeuvring uneven, rocky surfaces, as well as tight spots through the Penang’s urban jungle. He used the all-new Ford Ranger to transport and relocate trees slated to be chopped down at a construction site.
Wong’s challenge beat out the four other finalists who also brought their real-life challenge to life. They involved missions to save jungle wildlife, an excursion to the remote Orang Asli settlement, transporting 700kg of palm oil and a five hour expedition traversing rough terrain.
“Each of the unique challenges showcased the all-new Ford Ranger’s ability to take on the toughest, real-life tasks that drivers will face every day,” said David Westerman, regional manager, Asia Pacific, Ford Export & Growth Operations. “With the all-new Ford Ranger now available in Malaysia, drivers across the country will be able to experience the incredible versatility and capability that this class-leading truck offers.”
The Global Ford Ranger Challenge is a unique, worldwide experiential marketing campaign that gave the five finalists the chance to be the first consumers in Malaysia to test the all-new Ford Ranger. Malaysia was chosen as one of six markets to lead the launch of the all-new Ford Ranger across 180 global markets through this campaign.
Each of the finalists’ challenges was captured on video by a professional film crew provided by Ford and uploaded for voting on the Global Ford Ranger Challenge web site, which received almost 500,000 page views over the course of the highly successful campaign. The winner was determined by a combination of public votes and judges’ scores.
“Penang is currently experiencing rapid development and everywhere I turn, I see trees being cut down. My dream is to put an end to deforestation, and to achieve that, my wife and I were looking for a truck that could be our trusted sidekick,” said Wong, the winner. “Together, we will transplant threatened trees to parks, gardens and other public areas. This challenge was the perfect opportunity to see if the all-new Ford Ranger could help us with this mission – and it didn’t let us down,” said Wong.
“I wanted to see how the truck handles tough surfaces and tight streets, all while transporting tall, heavy trees. Loading a tree on to a truck is like installing a sail on the vehicle. Strong winds can easily tip the vehicle over,” added Wong. “I was pleased to find that the all-new Ford Ranger had no problems handling my challenge, thanks to its safety features that enhance stability. Additionally, it was easy to control and the steering was precise – I had no problem manoeuvring through the narrow roads in Penang.”
The first runner-up was administrative officer Denny Lim from Sarawak, for his challenge entitled the Sarawakian Terrain Warrior. Lim received a cash prize and a voucher toward the purchase of an all-new Ford Ranger. Utility engineer Peter Charles, who is based in Sabah, won the second runner-up prize for his Power Loader of Pitas challenge. He also received a cash prize and a voucher to redeem against the purchase of an all-new Ranger.
“With the Global Ford Ranger Challenge, Malaysian consumers had the chance to put the claim of Built Ford Tough to the ultimate test through tough, real-life challenges,” said Westerman. “We’re confident in the all-new Ford Ranger’s tough truck credentials and wanted consumers to experience its capabilities first-hand by pushing the truck to its limit.”
