MIDDLESEX, England – ‘A car launch with a difference’ is promised next week when Ford of Britain’s Communications team goes further and injects blockbuster excitement into the media introduction of the new Focus ST.
The high performance Ford model stars in an all-action film being premiered next month in the UK, and the media launch makes the most of the new car’s big-screen debut.
Called The Sweeney, the film is centred on London’s elite police team, The Flying Squad, and journalists attending the launch will have the chance to learn how to drive like a highly-skilled Sweeney* driver.
Ford was closely involved with the original 1970s Sweeney TV series on which the film is based. The popular TV series saw officers Regan and Carter racing Ford Granada, Consul and Cortina models around the streets of London apprehending criminals.
Emphasising the link with the past, one of the original Granadas used in the TV series will be displayed at the Focus ST launch event, which takes place at a race track near Heathrow Airport.
The new Ford Focus ST is equipped with a 250PS, 2.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine, expected to achieve 0-62 mph in 6.5sec and a top speed of 154 mph. This performance is complemented by enhanced dynamics and a comprehensive range of driver assistance features. Using a tuned EcoBoost engine, the Focus ST can return up to 39 mpg and CO2 emissions of 169 g/km, a 20% improvement over the previous Focus ST model.
• In London rhyming slang, the Flying Squad is known as the Sweeney Todd, or Sweeney for short.
