KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Ford Malaysia announced the five finalists chosen to put the all-new Ford Ranger through some of the toughest tests imaginable as part of the Global Ford Ranger Challenge.
The grand prize winner will receive an all-new Ford Ranger XLT 2.2L (manual transmission). The first runner-up will receive RM 9,888 (USD 3,156) in cash and a voucher worth RM 10,000 (USD 3,192) to purchase the all-new Ranger, while the second runner-up will receive RM 3,888 (USD 1,242) in cash and a voucher worth RM 5,000 (USD 1,596) to purchase the Ranger. All three winners will also receive Global Ford Ranger Challenge merchandise.
To participate, Malaysia drivers were invited to submit an application explaining why their unique challenge is the best way to test the all-new Ranger’s capabilities.
Horticulturist Zolkaplie Mustafa, utility engineer Peter Charles, administrative officer Denny Lim, IT technician Wong Kok Wei and 4x4 modifier, enthusiast and sea diver Peter Choy were selected from 300 entries to put the all-new Ranger through their own ultimate challenge.
Zolkaplie, with his entry title of Putrajaya’s Gentle Wildlife Saviour, will take the Ranger on a mission to trap and relocate wild animals from Putrajaya to the Hulu Langat forest reserve, while Peter Charles (the Treacherous Pitas Adventurist) will test the truck on a 30 km off-road journey, carrying a 700 kg load of palm oil, from his village in Pitas to a collection center in Paitan.
Meanwhile, Lim, who entered with the Sarawakian’s Longhouse Treasure, wants to test the 4x4 in a five-hour traversing expedition from Betong, Kuching, to Kampung Tuba, which will include off-roading, river crossing and climbing over hills and mountains.
For Wong's ultimate challenge – the Green Muscle of the Orient – he will transport and relocate various trees from his nursery to be planted at a specific location while maneuvering in tight spots through an urban jungle. Choy (Perak’s Urban Jungle Trekker) intends to challenge the all-new Ranger’s toughness in an excursion to a remote Orang Asli settlement in Pos Piah, Perak, which can only be reached with a 4x4 vehicle.
Each challenge is filmed by a crew from Ford and will be shared online for the general public to vote for their favourite challenge.
The Global Ford Ranger Challenge is a unique, worldwide experiential marketing campaign that has been making its way around the globe. It was launched in Malaysia in February in the lead up to the launch of the all-new Ford Ranger.
“Malaysian truck users depend on their vehicles to do what has to be done, pushing them hard every day be it at work or transporting their families and heavy items. This challenge showcases the all-new Ford Ranger’s ability to stand up to the toughest real-life conditions, and who better to demonstrate it than some of Malaysia’s hardest-working tough guys,” said David Westerman, regional manager, Asia Pacific, Ford Export & Growth (E&G).
The grand prize winner will be announced at the launch event of the all-new Ranger in Malaysia in late June.
