DEARBORN – Ford Export and Growth employees in Allen Park joined colleagues from around E&G and across the world for the eighth annual Global Week of Caring.

Two teams from E&G participated in projects focused on alleviating hunger in local communities.

One volunteered at the Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry in Taylor, Mich. The pantry provides food assistance to individuals and families in multiple communities. It allows clients to choose their preferred items from a selection of canned goods, produce, dairy products and frozen foods in a grocery store-like setting.

“We were very impressed by the pantry and the dedication of the people who donate their time on an almost daily basis to help feed those in need,” says Darci Gurney, Dealer Strategy Board manager. “This was such a rewarding experience for all of our volunteers that we’ve asked about returning to help them another time.”

Fish & Loaves volunteers say the pantry has helped as many as 1,600 people a month and is completely staffed by volunteers.

While there, the group from E&G sorted food donations and stocked shelves in the pantry. Members of the group also distributed boxes of food to senior citizens.

Other E&G team members volunteered at Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit, a Fish & Loaves partner organization, filling bags with donated fresh vegetables for distribution to people in need.

“Far too many people can’t afford to purchase fresh vegetables for their families,” says Janet Dutkewych, product marketing analyst, who co-chaired the day of volunteerism. “We are very pleased to have been able to help Gleaners meet that need.”

The food bank says it provides the equivalent of more than 100,000 meals a day to people unable to afford the food they need. Last year it distributed 46 million pounds of emergency food to more than 550 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries.

E&G has a long history of involvement with Gleaners, holding annual fund raisers and food drives for it and volunteering there regularly. The organization has also participated in Global Week of Caring events throughout the regions, as well as in Allen Park. This year Guam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Nigeria have completed GWOC projects, while Tahiti, Israel, and Madagascar have projects scheduled for later this year.
