SHANGHAI, China — Protecting the environment is a significant focus for Ford Motor Company. So at the Environmental Quality Office’s (EQO) regional environmental compliance workshop in Shanghai last month, each plant in the region was given the opportunity to showcase their environmental success stories.
To recognize the achievements made by plants in the region on environmental protection and green manufacturing, each year EQO APA presents a leadership award to a project in the region which demonstrates “Environmental Leadership, Environmental Benefit and Financial Impact.” This year 12 applications were submitted in APA for the award. As a pre-screening, before the workshop, three applications were carefully selected as finalists to be presented to the regional environmental team and global EQO management. The finalists were:
· Chennai Engine Plant – Reduce Reuse Recycle
· Chennai Assembly and Engine Plant – Process Improvements in Hazardous Waste Store
· Chongqing Engine Plant – Minimum Quantity Lubrication
Each candidate team presented a strong case for their project. Based on the strength of these presentations and the teamwork and leadership exhibited in each project, the judges decided for the first time to present two awards this year. Chennai Assembly was awarded the plant Environmental Leadership award for their “Process Improvements in Hazardous Waste Storage” project and Chongqing Engine Plant was awarded the division Environmental Leadership award for their “Minimum Quantity Lubrication” project.
Both projects demonstrated environmental stewardship. Chongqing Engine Plant is the first major engine program to use MQL in the region. Around 85 percent of the machining process at Chongqing Engine uses MQL, with demonstrated environmental benefits in coolant use, energy and water consumption, as well as reduced hydrocarbon and waste emissions. Chennai Vehicle Assembly Plant greatly improved the practices at their hazardous waste storage yard. By using FPS principles to standardize the process, the plant was able to minimize environmental and safety hazards, meanwhile achieving economic benefits from proper waste segregation.
Andy Hobbs, Environmental Quality Office Director, presented the awards and said, “We are pleased to recognize these projects with Environmental Leadership Awards. Not only are we growing our manufacturing footprint in APA, but we are doing so in an environmentally conscious way.”
Dave Schoch, group vice president and president, Asia Pacific, gave the leadership message at the workshop. . - As a global automotive leader, we are committed to serving our customers and communities with the highest standards of environmental quality,” he said, “ Going all the way back to the roots of our founder Henry Ford, we are committed to fostering a Better World.”
