GOA, India — The all-new Ford EcoSport has been making a major splash with Indian media and bloggers, impressed with its handling, the surprising power of the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine and how FUN it is to drive.
The ‘Discover EcoSport in Goa’ Tech Deep Dive kicked off an adrenaline rush among the almost 50 media from premier Indian trade magazines and blogs who took the urban SUV for a spin this week.
“This is indeed a great and proud moment for Ford India as we introduce technologies like the 1.0 litre EcoBoost and SYNC with this great looking vehicle,” said Joginder Singh, president and managing director, Ford India. “We are confident that we will offer power of choice to the Indian customers with four trims and we will open the bookings in June.”
Vinay Piparsania, executive director, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford India, then introduced ‘Sameer — the EcoSport’s target customer’ to the journalists. “What our research shows is that Sameer is 31, married with a kid and loves to go on long drives with his family. And our study showed that one of the favourite destinations for such trips is Goa and that’s why we are here today,” he said. Piparsania said Sameer views life as full of opportunities and needs a vehicle that will take him there in style and comfort and conveniently. The all-new EcoSport is expected to end his search, he said.
Ehab Kaoud, chief designer, Car Exteriors, Ford North America, provided an in-depth description of the several Ford design language queues that give EcoSport its sculptural, muscular looks while making it very aerodynamic. M Menon, global chief engineer for EcoSport talked about a young urban professional’s daily drive to work and weekday outings and how the Ford EcoSport fills these occasions with its smart, new features.
“Imagine yourself starting out for work having your coffee mug in one hand and laptop slung over. With EcoSport you just gently push the button on the door, get in without fiddling for keys, deposit your coffee in one of the holders in the centre console, buckle up and drive away. It’s just these little things that make the all-new EcoSport so much smarter and comfortable,” Menon said.
“Similarly, on a long journey, the back seat occupants can tilt their seat to recline and enjoy the drive, while ample storage space for water bottles and beverages so your kids stay hydrated. And there is a power supply for their iPads too,” Mennon added.
“We are very excited to bring this right-sized urban SUV to India, based on Ford’s B-car platform, which is expected to grow to 2 million vehicles by 2020,” said Trevor Worthington, director for Ford’s Passenger Vehicles and SUVs program, Asia Pacific. Finally the award winning EcoBoost 1.0 litre’s amazing capabilities to deliver the performance of a traditional 1.6 litre were showcased by Sudesh Sharma, general manager, Product Development, Powertrain.
Among others, Don Kowalski, director, Connected Services Solutions Organization, Ford Asia Pacific gave a presentation on the amazing in-car connectivity and entertainment with SYNC, which Ford has jointly developed with Microsoft.
Participants were taken through a detailed itinerary, route map and road safety instructions prior to the morning drive. Singh then flagged off the nine Mars Red EcoSports with the journalists onboard for their 140 km drive.
The car’s loaded package and the agile and responsive 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine had the journalists rightly impressed.
“Phenomenal driveability and responsive, communicative steering,” “great sounding engine with adequate power delivery,” and “easy and convenient SYNC experience’ were some of the comments made to Ford representatives during the drive.
“Just pushed EcoSport hard on winding Goa roads. Can't stop smiling. This car is FUN… FUN FUN!,” said Hormaz Sorabjee of Autocar India. “Terrific EcoSport chassis handles like a dream and just begs for more. Can't help feeling that 125 PS just not enough!” he said.
Leading TV channel NDTV 24x7’s auto editor Sidhrath Patankar was equally impressed with the EcoBoost. “There is amazing power in that engine, adequate for your day-to drive or overtaking. I’m sure once people start driving the EcoSport, it will dispel a lot of skepticism,” he said. “Ground clearance is 200 mm…And incredibly water wading capability is 500 mm. Didn’t see that coming,” he said.
“The new EcoSport has good throttle response. Not much turbo lag either. Hard to believe this is only 1000 cc!” remarked Harmaan Madon from blog, Autojunction.
The car’s SYNC feature came in as ‘seamless and bang on’ from Kranti Sambhav from NDTV’s Hindi edition, while Murlidhar Swaminathan from Hindu Business Line Smartbuy said the gearshift was smooth.

Ford representatives thanked all the participants for joining the drive and promised to take their feedback to the Product Development team. Being conducted in five waves, the drive will see nearly 170 journalists from India and overseas drive and experience the all-new EcoSport over the next two weeks.
