 Drive for peace

DATE: Will be calculated from "Release Start Date" field.

MUMBAI, India – To foster harmony in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, a Taj hotel employee set out on a drive for peace across India, racking up over 13,000 kilometres in his Ford Fusion.

Dilpreet Singh Bindra, director of catering sales at the Taj Palace Delhi, visited 60 Taj hotels in 42 cities during his 33-day 'One India. One Taj.' journey.

''After hearing the courageous stories of my colleagues at Taj Mumbai during the terrorist attack, I thought that the whole world should know about their sacrifices. So I took to my passion of driving to pay tribute to our martyrs,'' said Bindra who clocked an average of 500 kilometres each day. ''This journey was to connect Taj hotel employees and the people of India with a feeling of togetherness, oneness and harmony.''

Bindra's drive for peace took him over every terrain possible, from the deserts of Rajasthan to the jungles of Madhya Pradesh, through small villages and crowded cities, and along scenic coastal roads and super highways.

Wherever he stopped, his Ford – adorned with messages of peace and slogans remembering the 26/11 attacks – drew large crowds. The curious onlookers always asked the same two questions: ''What are you driving?'' and ''Did it give you any trouble?''

With a big grin on his face Bindra would respond: ''Ford'' and ''No problems at all!''

''I felt like an ambassador for Ford. I bought my Ford Fusion in 2008 and I just love it. I have a sense of safety and security when I'm behind the wheel of a Ford,'' said Bindra.

The trip, which started at the Taj Palace Delhi, ended at the scene of the terrorist attacks, the Taj Mumbai, where he delivered three books filled with messages of peace gathered during the journey. Reaching his final destination was a moving moment for him, as he had been employed by the Taj Mumbai over a decade ago.

''It was my campus placements and first job, so it will always have a special place in my heart,'' said the 35-year-old Bindra. ''I couldn't stop my tears as I entered the hotel premises.''

Bindra's journey of peace received extensive coverage in Indian media, and his beloved Ford Fusion was mentioned in every article. In September, Bindra's peace initiative was praised by Ford Motor Company President and CEO Alan Mulally when the two met up in New Delhi.

''This journey has changed my life. I was overwhelmed by the compassion of the people I met, and I'll treasure this experience forever,'' concluded Bindra.
