CRAIOVA, Romania – Craiova’s state-of-the-art engine plant celebrated an historic milestone earlier this month when the 100,000th 1.0-litre EcoBoost rolled off the production line.
Craiova first began manufacturing EcoBoost engines just 18 months ago, following a €180 million investment. The environmentally friendly facility introduced manufacturing techniques that reduce the amount of cooling agent needed in the processing of aluminum engine parts to just four or five millilitres per part from the usual amount of up to two litres - a more than 99 per cent decrease.
Plant manager Ian Pearson, said: “The 1-litre EcoBoost engine has been praised both by the industry experts, and by our clients as a truly remarkable engine, winning the International Engine of the Year award in 2012 and 2013. We’re thrilled that this engine is manufactured here in Craiova.”
Craiova-produced 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines are fitted to five models available in Europe and that number is set to rise to 11 by 2014. More than 1,000 people currently work at the engine plant at Craiova, in two shifts. This year Craiova also started producing a 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine that powers Ford models in the U.S., Mexico, China and Thailand. The plant manufactures almost 1,000 engines daily.
Ford of Europe plans to triple annual production of vehicles equipped with EcoBoost petrol engines to approximately 480,000 units by 2015, from 141,000 in 2011. The company projects that more than 300,000 of these vehicles will be powered by the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine.
