SHANGHAI, China — When going through U.S. Customs, Huixian Chen – known as @Zitong on Chinese Twitter Sina Weibo – was asked about her occupation by the officer. “Blogger!” Chen proudly declared, prompting a smile from the officer who responded, “Welcome to Detroit!”

Joined by 150 peers from around the world, seven Chinese bloggers including Chen arrived in Detroit on January 13 for the three-day 2013 Ford North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Ford Digital Summit.

The bloggers were welcomed by a group dinner upon arrival and were given a chance to tour the Henry Ford Museum – a must see spot in Detroit, where the bloggers and online influencers were warmly greeted by Scott Monty, global digital & multimedia communications manager, for Ford.

“I’m amazed to see so many beautiful vintage cars in the Henry Ford Museum! The place isn’t just an automobile museum, it tells the history of the industrial revolution, with exhibits from sophisticated clocks to giant steamers, from old carriages to electric vehicles,” said Xiaoyan Pan, a famous lifestyle blogger.

Bloggers went to the Rouge Factory on the second day. It was a five-part adventure which was more than just a walk along an assembly line. Jumping from a combination of cutting-edge environmental practices and industrial innovation, the bloggers were later invited to attend the Green Business Summit, where they heard from John Viera, Ford’s global director of Sustainability and Environmental Matters, Andrew Winston, best-selling author and globally recognized green business expert, and Matthew Banks, senior program officer - Climate Change, World Wildlife Fund, about what climate change means for the world and for Ford.

The highlight of the trip was saved for day three, when the bloggers attended the 2013 NAIAS during press days to witness the worldwide debut of the Ford Atlas Concept, the star of the show, a bold vision for the future of pickups.

“Ford Atlas Concept is so cool, you never imagine that a pick-up can be so fashionable and so sexy!” said Cui Xiangming, also known as Hanjiang Dudiao on his blog.

“When the Ford Atlas Concept came down from the sky with splash, it wowed everyone in the audience!” Cui added, commenting on the spectacular entrance the truck made, being lowered to the stage from high above.

“Having seen so many vehicles at the show, Ford Mustang is still my favorite! It’s hard to believe that in the U.S, you can own this car for less than USD40,000! I’m totally in love with this car!” said Huixian Chen.

At the auto show, bloggers had the privilege of meeting Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally, while posting blog entries about the Ford stand. It was also an opportunity for Ford’s executives to communicate with bloggers and online influencers from other parts of the world.

According to an internal summary, over 6,100 tweets @ford reached over 48.9 million followers online during the Ford Digital Summit and over 1,029 photos from the event were posted on Instagram.

"It was a great chance to observe Ford in a close-up manner, not to mention that your questions were answered directly by Alan Mulally! How many CEOs would take time to meet with bloggers alone? It truly shows Ford’s attitude to new media communications," said Cui Xiangming.

"As one of the top international auto shows, what I loved about 2013 NAIAS is it trimmed off all the distractions and made people the focus of the auto industry – building new, cool, environmentally-friendly cars," said He Wei, who uses the screen name of Louis9.

"In this game, Ford is definitely one of the top players. This trip offered us a better look at what Ford is doing with fuel efficiency, sustainability around the quality and new technologies. This year is also Ford’s founder Henry Ford’s 150th birth anniversary, it’s very significant for the company and I’m happy to be part of it to celebrate with Ford," added He.
