ZHAOQING, China — The Changan Ford Racing Team has become the first manufacturer to win 25 team victories in the history of the China Touring Car Championship (CTCC).
Changan Ford drivers Andy Yan, Rainy He and Fan Gaoxiang grabbed second, third and fourth spots respectively at the Guangdong International Circuit last weekend to secure the team’s victory.
The circuit’s curvy track posed serious challenges for the drivers because of this season’s new compensation rule, under which strong performing teams are obliged to carry extra weight, and there was some concern that the scorching summer weather might cause the tyres to wear a lot faster.
In response to these adversities, the Ford teams equipped their cars with extra ventilation ducts to prevent the engine and brakes from overheating.
Although hampered by heavy loads and a serious accident at the beginning, which the four Ford cars managed to avoid any serious altercations, Yan and his reliable new Focus fought off challenges from competitors to finish second.
Teammate Rainy He pulled off a great come-back by overtaking several rivals to fight his way up from sixth place to finish third, while Gaoxiang, whose car was hit during the earlier accident, finished fourth.
After the latest results, Changan Ford has accumulated 128 points, far ahead of the other teams. The seventh round of the CTCC, also the penultimate race of this season, will kick off at Shanghai Tianma Circuit on October 14. The Ford team can celebrate becoming season champion if they can pull off just three points in Shanghai.
