WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Brad Keselowski scored his second straight victory in the Nationwide Series Saturday by holding off Penske Racing teammate Sam Hornish Jr. over the closing laps of the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.
Keselowski has won the past four Nationwide races he’s entered – at Richmond, Kentucky, Iowa and the Glen.
Keselowski, who led 46 of the race’s 82 laps, outran the hard-charging Hornish by 1.41 seconds. From there it was a nine-second drop to third-place Brian Vickers. Completing the top five were Regan Smith and Elliott Sadler.
Keselowski could feel Hornish pushing him over the final laps.
“I thought he was going to beat me,” Keselowski said. “He’s a hell of a road-course racer. I made a couple little mistakes. I thought he would get me, to be honest. It just all came together.
“The Mustangs in the Nationwide Series are on a roll.”
The series point race tightened. Hornish, in second place, moved to within three points (from 14 down) of leader Austin Dillon.
“Brad and I had a great race,” Hornish said of the battle of Mustangs. “I could pressure him toward the end of the race, but I never got close enough to take advantage of anything. With three laps to go, I got really sideways through the ‘bus stop’.
“It got to the point where it felt like I had driven 10 laps over 100 percent each of those laps. I couldn’t get beside him to wehre I ahd a legitimate shot to pass him. I needed to make sure I didn’t make a mistake.” Ford Finishing Order:
1st – Brad Keselowski
2nd – Sam Hornish Jr.
10th – Trevor Bayne
15th – Travis Pastrana
21st – Joey Logano
22nd – Michael Annett
