KANSAS CITY - In an assembly plant, ergonomics is a big deal. When an operator is doing repetitive motions throughout the day, if the ergonomics of the job do not flow well, it can cause the operator pain.
This is what happened on an MP&L skid dock at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant (KCAP).
The issue was brought to the attention of HiLo Mechanic Randy Gibson, who brought on Terry Smith, a lift-truck representative. Together, the team worked to solve the problem and make the operator’s job flow more smoothly.
The operator’s job is to lift a manual hook from the trailer to release it up off the dolly. The operator completes this task at least 96 times per hour.
To alleviate the one arm being over-worked, Smith designed a hydraulic hook with safety cables, which could be used to move the hook from the trailer.
Additionally, a pin, which drops down to lock the dolly in place, sometimes gets bent. The team worked to create a solution to help with that as well.
Lastly, on the AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) an extra chain was added so the operator could rotate his arms.
Working together, the KCAP team accomplished the goal of improving a job and looking out for the health and safety of the operator.
