DUNTON – A number of people from Warley and Dunton have been helping the parents of primary school children in Basildon to improve their computer skills.
Over the course of 10 weeks, we take parents through the basics of "What is a computer" to creating Excel spread sheets to taking some detours through the Internet, Word and Excel just to make things interesting!
If anyone is interested in helping out, we're always looking for volunteers! Some things to point out:
• Contrary to what you might think, you don't need to work in IT. Many of the volunteers work in other areas of the company.
• Each weekly session lasts for approximately 90 minutes - 9:30 - 11.
• Depending on how many volunteers we have, each person helps out 2-3 times during the 10-week course.
• We won't throw you in at the deep end. Typically, we have two people at each session (one leading, one supporting), so if you don't feel confident leading, you could come along to support.
•Although we are not working with children, we are working in a school environment, so all the volunteers are CRB checked. If you do not have a CRB form, this can be organised for you.
We've all found it really rewarding, and it's been great to hear from one of the Heads that our helping the parents is also helping the children’s' skills.
