DEARBORN - Jose Pareja is a certified Ford MODAPTS (Modular Arrangement of Predetermined Time Standard) instructor. MODAPTS is a technique used by Ford engineers to analyze the time required to perform work. The MODAPTS system uses a standardized alpha/numeric coding system based on the work motions.
In 2012, Pareja’s first assignment was to co-teach MODAPTS at the Hermosillo and Cuautitlan Assembly Plants. The course and materials used, as well as the class itself, were taught in English. While conducting the class in both plants, Pareja realized that many of the students did not fully comprehend the material that was being presented in English. Pareja found himself translating the presentation, as well as the manuals and exercise materials.
When asked to go to Argentina to give MODAPTS training, Pareja decided to translate the manual, exercises, exams and the PowerPoint presentation into Spanish. This was done to ensure the students could fully comprehend and have access to all the information available in their own language.
To avoid local colloquial expressions, the translation was done in International Spanish language so that any Spanish-speaking Ford employee could benefit and completely understand it. Translating the materials took many hours of weekend and evening work.
The MODAPTS training course has two parts: theory and practice (exercises on site at the end).
After Jose completed the English to Spanish translation and used it at the Pacheco Argentina facility, it became clear that the students fully understood the concepts and materials that were being presented. The exams were sent to International MODAPTS Association (IMA), who is exclusively authorized to evaluate them. All students who participated in the MODAPTS training at the Pacheco plant passed the four hour exam with high scores.
Pareja is being recognized with a 2013 Global Diversity and Inclusion award for taking the initiative to translate all materials, so that students whose first language is Spanish could clearly understand MODAPTS. It is the first time any MODAPTS documentation (manual, exercises, and exams) and training has been done in a language other than English. In the future all training in Spanish-speaking countries will be done using the Spanish-language materials.
“I feel honored to have received this award and I would like to thank the Global Diversity and Inclusion team for recognizing me for the 2013 award,” said Pareja.
