Smithsonian's National Zoo Receives Major Pledge for Giant Panda Research from Ford Motor Company Fund; 24-hour Panda Pregnancy Watch Begins
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo will receive U.S. $400,000 over the next two years from the Ford Motor Company Fund to study the health of giant pandas. Zoo scientists, in collaboration with their Chinese colleagues at the developing Wildlife Disease Control Center, will research disease transmission and susceptibility to benefit captive and wild giant pandas. The center is part of the world-renowned Wolong Nature Reserve. The zoo also will use the gift to start upgrading its analog panda cam system in the David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat. The panda cams are operated by volunteers who began the 24-hour behavior monitoring of pregnant panda Mei Xiang Tuesday, Sept. 4.

An army of 10,000 Ford employees, retirees and dealers have set their sights on more than 200 community projects on six continents for the seventh annual Ford Global Week of Caring.
From Sept. 8 through Sept. 16, the Ford Volunteer Corps will be out in force with hammers, shovels and paintbrushes in more than 20 countries to tackle community projects from Asia to Africa and from Europe to The Americas.
The volunteers will repair schools in Australia and South Africa, organize an anti-litter rally in India, construct community water projects in China and Thailand, install water desalinization equipment in Indonesia and build barn owl boxes on coastal marshes in the U.K.
Ford volunteers in the U.S. will take on projects in 15 states including building houses, packing food and providing legal service to veterans.

Walking into the first floor of the Livonia Transmission’s Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWT), James Tucker is diligently measuring the pH level from a sample of water. The sample came from a 100,000 gallon batch tank that has cycled through the purification process, and when it tests clean, the water is sent back to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.
