Announcements
Umbrella Group Logo
Three Weeks Remain in Medicare Annual Enrollment Period
Peer Support Volunteers are available to assist Medicare-age Ford salaried retirees considering switching health care insurance plans during the Annual Enrollment Period, which ends Dec. 31. Our website is http://www.ford-umbrella-group.org. E-mail inquiries can be sent to peer-support@ford-umbrella-group-org.

Retirees, who previously selected Private Fee for Service (PFFS) Medicare Advantage Plans that now are being discontinued, need to take action. There is concern that some of the about 4,000 impacted retirees may not understand that their coverage will revert to Medicare alone if they do not select a new plan by the end of the year.

Several retirees with Medigap coverage, who considered switching to another Medigap plan or with a different health care insurance company, report that they were subject to insurability questions. Some were denied or offered higher premium proposals; however, it is important to remember that a retiree may simply remain in his/her present plan with no changes in coverage at the premium price that was offered by the present insurer. Disqualification for pre-existing conditions will gradually be phased out by 2014 under the health care legislation passed earlier this year.

When the transformed Louisville Assembly Plant restarts production in 2011, it will operate on two shifts with approximately 2,900 employees – up from today's one shift and approximately 1,100 employees. The 1,800 additional jobs are expected to be filled through a combination of transferring employees from other facilities, re-activating workers on indefinite layoff at the time of launch and hiring new workers.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally on the U.S.-Korea FTA
The following is a statement from Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally on the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement announcement made on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010:

"As a global company committed to free trade, Ford Motor Company applauds the outlines of the revised U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement that were announced this week. President Barack Obama and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk vigorously advocated the important principle of two-way trade, and the resulting agreement provides greater clarity and transparency by affirmatively addressing the issues surrounding non-tariff and tariff barriers. These new provisions provide Ford greater confidence that we will be able to better serve our Korean customers. We deeply appreciate the tireless efforts of the Obama Administration and Congress to improve this agreement and open the Korean auto market."

Executive Corner
Jamie Allison

Jamie Allison
Ford Director of North America Motorsports
Ford Motor Company

Why do we race? That question kicked off @Ford Online's interview with Ford Director of North America Motorsports Jamie Allison. Below are excerpts from that conversation.

Q: Why is Ford involved in racing?
A: We race because that's where our customers are. We do a lot of research that shows that 38 percent of people who intend to buy a car say that they are motorsports fans. Then if we peel the onion a few layers down and ask people what forms of motorsports they follow, NASCAR is number one at 84 percent, followed by NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) at 68 percent. That's why we are involved in those two forms of motorsports. Our customers are there. So we race because it is good business.

Another reason we're involved in racing is that it is part of our history. Henry Ford raced a year-and-a-half before he started Ford. So racing is in our blood. It's in our DNA. Henry Ford used racing to help prove out his product and to attract attention. We use racing to help prove out our products today and we use motorsports as a forum to communicate the Ford story.

Our goal is to garner championships – to showcase that Fords are better than non-Fords.
