Ford F-150 EcoBoost Torture Test
The F-150 EcoBoost Torture Test, one of the most audacious projects ever undertaken here at Ford, gets the national spotlight this Sunday on NBC.
Beginning last fall, we threw everything we could at the new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine in a series of grueling tests designed to prove its toughness and durability. We started by choosing a random engine off the assembly line and running it on the dyno for 150,000 miles of stress testing. We froze it. We fried it. We then pulled 55 tons of timber up a mountain, ran full throttle pulling maximum load for 24 hours straight at the Homestead Racetrack and finished the legendary Baja 1000 off-road race with it. We even took it up to Davis Dam and embarrassed the best that Dodge and Chevy had to offer in a torque sprint while pulling 9,000 pound trailers. After 165,000 miles of abuse, we completed its journey with a live tear-down in front of 1,000 spectators at the North American International Auto Show.
This Sunday at 4:30 p.m. eastern daylight time, NBC will broadcast the "Ford F-150 EcoBoost Torture Test", a 30 minute documentary narrated by Mike Rowe which details the incredible punishment the new EcoBoost engine was subjected to.
Also this Sunday from 4:30-5:30 p.m., join V6 Chief Engineer Jim Mazuchowski for a Live Chat at www.thefordstory.com.
Latest News from Peer Support
Peer Support, Ford Employee Benefit Office and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan representatives met together this week to discuss Salaried Retiree health care issues and BCBSM strategies and plans. The state's largest provider is preparing active marketing campaigns for this year, including to Ford policy holders. The emphasis will be on the Blues' Medicare Advantage PPO offerings. Peer Support will provide further information throughout the year on the Blue's efforts and controversies on our website (http://www.ford-umbrella-group.org) and via Blue Oval Connect and @Ford.
Republican Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan's 2012 budget proposals have Medicare reform as a major focus. Kaiser Health News provided a useful summary of major media initial coverage. Click here for more information on this topic. Many experts agree that there is now smaller chance of significant change to the 2010 legislation from this year's Congress. Debate on the Ryan initiative will shift the Medicare and Medicaid structural disagreements to 2012 and the election cycle, thereby keeping most plans the same for 2012 for those retirees reaching age 65 or considering switching their present Medicare supplemental coverage. Prices for 2012 will not be available until the fourth quarter.
Retirees with questions about their health care insurance or wishing to share opinions on these or other Medicare subjects can email them to peer-support@ford-umbrella-group.org.

Ford Begins Building One of the World's First Digital Child Crash Dummies
Ford is beginning research into one of the world's first digital human child body models that could someday serve as a digital dummy for computer crash testing with a goal of enhancing research of future safety technologies.
The work is the next step in Ford's decade-long research to build a sophisticated and detailed computer adult human model, with body parts and organs painstakingly replicated so scientists could better understand what happens to the adult body in a crash.

Aerodynamics: Ford Vehicles Cheat the Wind, Helping Drivers to Beat the Pump
Fuel economy improvements can result from reducing friction and drag – not only within engines and transmissions, but as air flows over and around the vehicle as it efficiently skims through the atmosphere at cruising speeds.
The all-new Ford Explorer SUV, 2011 North American Truck of the Year, and the stylish Ford Flex crossover both enjoy improved fuel efficiency from painstaking detail work by designers and aerodynamicists collaborating in the wind tunnel.
Explorer delivers class-leading fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, when equipped with front-wheel drive and the standard 290-horsepower V6 engine.

We begin today with just a few excerpts from the entries, but we will keep sharing in this space, and will be contacting many of you for more. In May, we'll focus on some great Mom stories and fascinating information from our veterans. In June, we'll look at Dads and at history as our company turns 108.
