On a chilly December day, Jacque Childs, Transit Trim and Karen Westfall McGowen, Retiree-Truck Body, bundled up warmly to sell raffle tickets for an ‘Adopt a Family’ effort in a drafty walkway outside the production floor. The pair volunteered their time to kick off the holiday season for the Local UAW 249 Women’s Committee by hosting the raffle ticket sales drive.
The drawing is for a 39-inch flat screen television with proceeds of the fundraiser benefitting the ‘Adopt a family’ organization the group is sponsoring.
“We do a lot of things for family and this is just another way of us coming together to help another family,” said Jacque. “We decided we wanted to host an ‘Adopt a Family’ drive to reach out to a northland family and make it a bit more personal.”
The past few holiday seasons, the group held fundraisers for Synergy House, a battered women’s shelter in the Kansas City metro. However, at the end of last year, they decided to devote the attention toward the northland part of Kansas City since the Kansas City Assembly Plant is located in the northland area.
“Just knowing we’re bringing joy to people and a smile to a child’s face makes an impact,” said Karen. “It’s truly a warm feeling knowing there is something we can do as a group to contribute to making the season happier.”
The drawing was held on December 20 and the prize collected at the UAW Local 249 hall.
