 Treat yourself as you would treat your car

​With the winter season hanging on longer than normal this year, the Brownstown medical department thinks that now is as good a time as any to treat yourself as well as you treat your car.

In the winter season, many people put winter tires on their automobiles, they change their oil, get their systems checked, put on new wiper blades and top off their wind shield washer fluid.  People often take car maintenance and other measures pretty seriously to prevent problems.  Unfortunately with personal health care, it is a very different story.

Most people don't see their doctor every year for a regular check-up.  Many people don't eat right and instead partake in too many vices.

Here's the best advice any medical department could ever give you.  Every person should be seeing his or her primary care physician yearly (at a minimum).  One of the most important tests your doctor will perform is blood work.  From your blood, your doctor can check the health of your liver and kidneys, they can check your lipids (good and bad cholesterol), blood sugar, thyroid function and look for markers of infection and inflammation.  Your physician can tailor your blood work to specific complaints and will do tests appropriate for your age and health.

In addition to yearly blood work, women should have yearly Pap smears and yearly mammograms (for those over age 40).  Men should have yearly prostate exams (over age 50).  Both sexes should have colonoscopies after the age of 50 (or younger if you have a family history of colon cancer) and both sexes should be fully immunized.

Those with chronic diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension, should be seen by their physicians more frequently, as closer monitoring of these diseases yield significantly better outcomes. 

Seeing your doctor and maintaining your health is only part of the picture.  You have to avoid cigarettes and all tobacco products.  If you consume alcohol, consume it only in moderation.  Make sure you stretch and exercise every day.  Work toward becoming more flexible and strengthening your core muscles.  Find out your ideal weight and work toward reaching that goal. 

Going to the doctor should not be saved for when you are sick.  It should be part of your health maintenance routine.  Resolve in the chilly temperatures of March 2014 to take better care.

You may not be a Mustang, but you deserve to be treated like one!
